“I the LORD do keep it; I will water it every moment:
lest any hurt it, I will keep it night and day.”
(Isaiah 27:3)
The care of God over His people is among the sweetest truths in Scripture. The Lord does not simply create, redeem, and then leave His people to themselves. He watches them. He preserves them day and night. His care is active, tender, effectual, and everlasting.[1]
In Isaiah 27, the prophet depicts the church as a vineyard kept by God Himself. The Lord declares that He waters it every moment and guards it constantly lest harm come. The image is rich with comfort and fills us with thanksgiving because God’s care extends to all His people—rich and poor, strong and weak, mature and young believers—with perfect knowledge and fatherly affection.
His watchfulness is also personal. God cares for His people as though each one stood alone before Him. Men divide attention imperfectly, but divine care never weakens. He gives full attention to all without diminishing care for any. The shepherd knows every sheep individually.
Moreover, God watches over us as a father over a beloved child. Scripture speaks of His people as His treasure and delight. In fact, believers are described as the apple of His eye.
The care of God is likewise effectual. Human efforts often fail, but divine care never fails to preserve what it undertakes.
The care of God also abides continually. The Lord neither slumbers nor sleeps but guards His people day and night without interruption.
In truth, God surrounds His people above and beneath, before and behind, within and around. He preserves, protects, provides, defends, and vindicates them continually. Nothing concerning their welfare lies outside His attention. He sees every injury done against them. No danger escapes His sight. No affliction arrives unnoticed. No enemy acts independently of His permission.
Let us therefore be thankful before the God who keeps His vineyard continually, whose care is extensive, tender, active, effectual, and everlasting.
Contemplations:
- The Comfort of Being Kept. I am thankful that my security rests not in my strength but in God’s keeping. I fail, grow weary, and become fearful, yet the Lord continues watching over me. The thought that He keeps His people night and day gives deep comfort to my soul.
- The Tenderness of God’s Care. I often think first about God’s power and forget His tenderness. Yet Scripture speaks of lambs carried in His arms and believers guarded as the apple of His eye. I am thankful that divine strength is joined with such gentle care.
- The Constancy of Divine Attention. There are times when I feel forgotten by others or overlooked in ordinary life. Yet God never loses sight of His people. His attention never weakens and His care never pauses. I am thankful for His unceasing love.
- The Safety of God’s Presence. The picture of God surrounding His people before and behind, above and beneath, fills me with peace. I am thankful that no circumstance can place me outside His providence or beyond His caring hand.
Prayer (Thanksgiving):
Most gracious and faithful Lord, thank You for the unceasing care You exercise over Your people. You do not abandon what You redeem. You keep, preserve, water, and watch over Your vineyard continually.
Thank You that Your care reaches every believer. Rich or poor, weak or strong, known or hidden, all remain beneath Your fatherly attention.
Lord, thank You for the tenderness of Your care. You gather lambs into Your arms and carry them gently. You speak of believers as the apple of Your eye. Such language reveals a compassion deeper than I even expect.
Lord Jesus, thank You for being the Shepherd who guards the flock faithfully. You laid down Your life for the sheep and continue preserving them now.
Thank You that You surround Your people completely. You stand before and behind, above and beneath. No enemy reaches them apart from Your permission and no trial escapes Your wisdom. You also see every injustice and remember every wrong done against Your people. Your care includes both preservation and vindication.
Lord, teach me to trust Your care more fully. When fear rises, remind me that I am kept. When I am weak, remind me that You preserve. When loneliness comes, remind me that Your presence remains.
Thank You for keeping Your people now and preserving them unto glory. I am grateful that what You begin You complete.
In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
