“Then Nebuchadnezzar came near to the mouth of the burning fiery furnace… Then Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, came forth of the midst of the fire.”
(Daniel 3:26)
The miraculous rescue of the three Hebrew children from the fiery furnace recorded in Daniel 3 is a powerful display of God’s preserving grace. These three servants of God were thrown into the blazing furnace at the command of a proud and raging king because they would not bow to his image. But in the midst of that furnace, God preserved them.
This event demonstrates how God sometimes allows His people to go through times of trial, but when He does, He always preserves them within it. These men were not spared the furnace, but they were kept safe in the furnace. The same God who could have stopped their suffering chose instead to display His power by bringing them through it unharmed.[1]
This reveals the nature of God’s dealings with His people. Trials are often the stage upon which God displays His glory. The believer may be brought into difficult, even dangerous situations, yet God is always present. He governs the fire, limits its power, and ensures that it cannot consume those who trust in Him.
As a result of God’s miraculous rescue of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, the king was forced to admit that Jehovah was the most high God. Though this change of perspective did not last, it served to magnify God’s power and demonstrated how even the enemies of God are compelled, at times, to confess His greatness.
This story also assures us that no trial is without purpose. God had a design in allowing this event. He revealed His power, preserved His servants, and made His name known to Nebuchadnezzar’s kingdom. What seemed like certain destruction became a testimony of divine deliverance. So it is often in the life of the believer. What appears to be loss or danger is turned, by God’s hand, into good.
We can be grateful that God does not abandon His people to suffering but sustains them through it. And when the appointed time comes, He brings them out. So whatever the trial, however intense the pressure, remember that God remains faithful. He will not allow the fire to destroy those who belong to Him.
Contemplations:
- God’s Presence in Trials. Lord, thank you for being present with Your people in the midst of their trials. You did not leave these men alone in the furnace, and You do not leave me alone in my afflictions. Even when I do not see Your hand, You are there, sustaining and preserving me. Help me remember this truth and give You thanks even when I am in the midst of difficulty.
- Preservation Through Affliction. Father, thank You that You do not allow trials to destroy Your people. Though the fire may be hot, You set its limits. You preserve Your people, even when circumstances seem overwhelming. I am grateful that You have kept me through past trials, and that You will continue to uphold me. My heart is filled with gratitude for Your preserving grace.
- God’s Glory Revealed in Deliverance. Lord, thank You that You use trials to display Your glory. What seems like defeat is often the very means by which You make Your power known. Even Your enemies are forced to acknowledge Your greatness. Help me see my trials in this light, and to be thankful that You are always working all things for Your glory and my good.
- Faith That Waits on God. Father, I thank You for the example of those who trusted You and waited for Your deliverance. They did not act in haste, but remained where You had placed them until the time was right. Teach me to wait upon You, to trust Your timing, and to be content with Your will. Let me give thanks not only when I am delivered, but while I am waiting.
Prayer (Thanksgiving)
Faithful and mighty God, thank you for Your preserving grace and for the many ways You have sustained me through trials. You are the God who is present in the fire, who governs every circumstance, and who brings Your people safely through. I am never alone, but always under Your watchful care.
Thank You that You do not abandon Your people when they face difficulty. You could remove every trial, yet in Your wisdom You often choose to carry us through them instead that Your power may be made known. Thank You for the ways You have upheld me in past afflictions when I was weak and unable to stand on my own. You have been my strength and my refuge.
Thank You that no trial is without purpose. You are working in all things, even when I do not understand Your ways. You are revealing Your glory, strengthening my faith, and preparing me for what lies ahead. Forgive me for the times I have complained or doubted, and teach me to give thanks in all circumstances.
Lord, I am so thankful that You set limits to every trial. The fire cannot consume me because You hold me in Your hand. You know how far it may go, and You will not allow it to destroy what You have purposed to preserve.
Teach me to trust You more fully, to wait on Your timing, and to give You thanks both in trial and in deliverance. Let my life bear witness to Your faithfulness and my heart continually praise You for all Your works.
In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
