“Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost.”
(Titus 3:5)

Scripture declares time and again that salvation does not arise from works of righteousness that we may do or through any merit of our own. Rather, God saves according to His mercy, through the renewing work of the Holy Spirit. That is to say, the inward or moving catalyst behind salvation lies entirely within the heart of God.[1]

God found nothing in the sinner to awaken His affection. Instead He saw corruption, rebellion, and ingratitude. Yet in His mercy He chose to save. The apostle, therefore, exclaims with wonder at the riches of His mercy: “But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, by grace ye are saved;” (Eph. 2:4-5).

The Father bestows grace upon sinners through the meritorious work of His Son. Every spiritual blessing comes through Him, and every conversion is the fruit of His suffering.

The prophet foretold that Christ would see the travail of His soul and be satisfied. His sufferings were the very means by which redemption was secured, the cross the place where the price of salvation was paid, and the agonies of Christ the birth pains through which new life was brought to sinners. By His sacrifice believers are set apart for God.

Moreover, the word of God is the chief instrument in the work of regeneration, the seed through which new life is born. It enlightens the understanding, converts the soul, and leads the sinner toward salvation. The same truth that exposes sin provides the grace that restores the soul.

God moves toward sinners because of His great mercy and grace, Christ secures redemption through His sacrifice, and the Spirit applies that redemption through the word of truth. The sinner contributes nothing to his salvation except the sin from which he must be delivered. Thus, the washing of regeneration and the renewing of the Holy Ghost testify that salvation belongs wholly to the Lord.

Contemplations:

  1. Lord, I confess the poverty of my own righteousness. Father, Your word declares that salvation does not come by works of righteousness which we have done. Which is to say that my efforts, intentions, and actions cannot cleanse my soul. I stand in need of the mercy that You alone can give.
  2. Father, I acknowledge the depth of my former corruption. When I remember what my heart was apart from Your grace, I am humbled. My thoughts were not fixed on You, and my desires often dishonored You. I confess that I was lost in my own sinfulness and unable to rescue myself; only Your mercy could reach me.
  3. Lord, I confess my dependence on Christ alone. The salvation of my soul rests entirely on the work of Jesus Christ. His suffering, His sacrifice, and His intercession stand as the foundation of my hope; apart from Him I have no claim upon Your favor. My confidence is solely in the grace revealed through His cross.
  4. Father, I confess my need for continual renewal. Your word speaks of the washing of regeneration and the renewing of the Holy Ghost. I know that my heart still needs this renewing work. Cleanse my thoughts, purify my desires, and strengthen my obedience. Let Your Spirit continue shaping my life so that I may walk in the grace You have given.

Prayer (Confession)

Merciful Father, I come before You with a humble and repentant heart, for Your word declares that we are not saved by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to Your mercy.

My heart often trusts too much in my own efforts. At times I imagine that my actions or intentions could make me worthy of Your favor. Yet when I look honestly at myself, I see how far I fall short. Even the best things I attempt are mixed with weakness and imperfection. Forgive me for every moment when pride has led me to rely on my own righteousness.

Lord, I also confess the corruption that once ruled my heart. Apart from Your grace I loved what was sinful and pursued what was empty. My desires were not directed toward Your will but toward my own satisfaction. And without Your mercy I would still be wandering in that condition.

I thank You that salvation rests upon Your compassion rather than my merit. You have shown mercy through Jesus Christ, who endured suffering to redeem sinners. His sacrifice is my only plea, His righteousness is my only covering.

Cleanse me again by the renewing work of Your Spirit. Wash away every lingering stain of sin and strengthen my heart to walk in obedience. Let the truth of Your word shape my thoughts and guide my life.

Teach me to live with humility and gratitude. Since salvation is a gift of mercy, let my life be marked by reverence and thankfulness, and help me remember that I stand before You only because of the grace revealed in Christ.

Continue the work You have begun within me. Renew my mind, purify my desires, and guide my steps in the path of righteousness. And may my life reflect the mercy that has saved me and the grace that sustains me.

In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
