“Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God.”
(Psalm 90:2)
The statement that God existed before the world is easily admitted. Even many unthinking will grant that. But in this psalm Moses goes further to set God over against all created beings in order to expose how deeply unstable everything else is, and how utterly unmoved God remains. God is not simply older than creation. He is other than creation.[1]
Created beings are marked by change. They rise, decline, decay, and pass away. Human life is full of alteration, and nothing under heaven remains fixed. Because of this, men are prone to measure God by themselves, assuming fluctuation where there is none. While the world is governed through countless changes, God Himself is never changed by them. His eternity is not only one of duration, but also of steadfastness.
God’s eternality relates not only to His essence but also to His providence. Though He subjects the world to continual revolutions, He remains immovable. He governs without being shaken. He orders all things without being drawn into their instability. While everything else is swept along in continual change, God’s nature remains the same. The flux belongs to the creature, not to the Creator.
There is also an implied contrast here with the false gods of the nations. They multiply, shift, and fade with human imagination. They creep into history and vanish again. They rise and fall as men invent and abandon them. But the Lord of Psalm 90 stands alone. From everlasting to everlasting, He is God. His being does not expand or contract. His glory does not grow or diminish. He does not become what He was not or lose what He is.
No shadow of change touches Him. His being does not depend on another. He cannot decay, because there is no weakness in Him. He cannot be overpowered, because there is none stronger. What has no beginning of duration can have no end, and what exists necessarily can never cease to exist.
This truth teaches us that stability is not found within the world, nor within the self, but in God alone. While all else moves toward decay, God remains. While all else is subject to interruption, God endures. He possesses His being in one eternal present, without beginning, without end, without alteration. From everlasting to everlasting, He is God.
Contemplations:
- I am too quick to think of God as reacting. I often imagine God responding as I do, adjusting as circumstances change. Yet God does not react. He rules. While events unfold, He remains the same. I need to stop projecting my instability onto Him and learn to rest in His unchanging nature.
- Change unsettles me because I forget who does not change. Time alters everything I see, including myself. That constant motion breeds anxiety. Yet God is not swept along with it. He stands over it. I need to anchor my confidence in Him rather than in conditions that cannot last.
- God’s constancy is not indifference. The fact that God is unmoved does not mean He is distant. His providence is active even while His nature is unchanging. I am comforted to know that His care does not fluctuate with circumstances. He is steady in His power, truth, righteousness, and goodness toward those who trust Him.
- Only God deserves absolute trust. Everything else passes from one state to another. Relationships change. Strength fades. Opportunities close. God alone remains the same. I am called to lift my thoughts above earth and trust in the God who never changes.
Prayer (adoration)
Eternal God, I adore You for who You are, not for what You give or for what You change, but for what never changes in You. You existed before anything had shape or name. Before the mountains stood, before the earth took form, before time began to move, You were God. You did not come into being. You did not grow into power. You simply are, complete, whole, and undiminished.
I praise You for Your unchanging nature. Everything around me shifts. Strength fades. Plans collapse. Certainty erodes. Even my own heart is unstable and easily moved. But You rule without being altered. You govern change without entering into it. While the world turns endlessly, You remain the same.
I adore You for Your eternal constancy. You do not wake to new information. You do not grow weary of sustaining what You have made. You do not lose interest or attention. What You were before the world existed, You are now. What You are now, You will always be. Your power does not fluctuate. Your wisdom does not sharpen. Your goodness does not deepen or decline. It is fully present at every moment.
I worship You as the only being who truly exists without limitation. Everything else depends on You for breath, strength, and continuance. Nothing else possesses life in itself. Nothing else endures without Your will. Creatures rise and fall. Nations appear and vanish. Generations come and go. But You remain untouched by decay, perfectly sufficient in Yourself.
I adore You for the steadiness of Your providence. You govern a world filled with motion, conflict, and uncertainty, yet You are never unsettled by it. History does not threaten You. Time does not pressure You. Disorder does not surprise You. You see every change without being changed. You direct every outcome without being drawn into confusion. That kind of authority humbles me and draws my heart to worship.
I praise You because Your unchanging nature is not cold or distant. You are not fixed and detached. You are steady and faithful. Your care does not waver. Your promises do not expire. Your truth does not bend with generations. Those who trust You are not resting on something temporary or fragile but on the living God who remains the same through every age.
I adore You because You are the only safe place for trust. Everything else eventually fails. Bodies weaken. Minds forget. Circumstances shift without warning. But You remain firm. You do not abandon what You have begun and Your faithfulness is as solid as Your being.
I confess that my understanding is small, but I submit to what You have revealed. From everlasting to everlasting, You are God. No rival challenges You. No force limits You. You are above time, above creation, and above every power that rises and falls beneath You.
Receive my adoration, not because You need it, but because it is fitting. Shape my worship by the truth of who You are. Let my heart rest in Your immovable nature. And let my confidence be anchored in Your eternal being. For You alone are God and always will be.
