“Therefore He is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them.” (Heb. 7:25).
Charles Spurgeon said, “Christ the King is gone from earth. He is seated at his table in heaven, eating bread in the kingdom of God. Surrounded now not by publicans and harlots, but by cherubim and seraphim, not by mocking crowds, but by adoring hosts, the King sits at his table and entertains the glorious company of the faithful, the Church of the firstborn whose names are written in heaven. He fought before he could rest.”
On earth he struggled with his enemies, and it was not till he had triumphed over all that he sat down at the table on high. There sit, You King of kings, there sit until Your last enemy shall be made thy footstool.
What can we do while Christ sits at the table above? How do you reach Him if He is in heaven?
These hands cannot reach him; these eyes cannot see him; but our prayers, like sweet perfume, set burning here on earth, can rise in smoke to the place where the King sits at his table, and our spikenard can diffuse a perfume even in heaven itself.
Do you want to reach Christ? Your prayers can do it. Would you now adore him; would you now set forth your love?
With mingled prayer and praise, like the offering of the morning and the evening sacrifice, your incense can come up acceptably before the Lord. Charles Spurgeon, A Collection of Sermons.
Contemplation:
Lord, I implore you to send in Your light and Your Spirit into my hearts, to touch me; so that while the day of my visitation lasts, I may know the things that belongs to my peace. You are in heaven. I am on earth. But accept my praises and prayer to you that I might adore you.
Lord, I implore You to pity and deliver me and all those I know who are lying under any distress or affliction, and furnish them with patience to bear it, so long as You please to on to it; that we all may acknowledge it to be the only best thing which yYou do for us, though it is difficult. Let our prayers rise up. Let us rely on you in our affliction.
Prepare me for my visitation with you, either to be removed out of this life, or for any change that You shall bring me in this life, while I am in it. There is nothing permanent here except your Word and all that which you communicate to me in grace. There is nothing that is unchangeable except for you, O Lord, and Your love to Your own in Jesus Christ.
Give me the grace to seek after that in my prayers and praise that I might reach up to heaven and boldly come to Your throne of grace through Christ. Let me be fully satisfied with that rich portion purchased to me in Jesus Christ, that I might taste of the sweetness of your grace and love.
