“Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again.” (John 10:17)
God’s eternal plan of redemption hinges on the singular role of His Son, Jesus Christ, as the sole Mediator between a holy God and sinful humanity (1 Tim. 2:5). This unique appointment, affirmed at both His baptism and transfiguration, sets Him apart as the one through whom salvation is secured (Heb. 3:1-6).
Christ’s mediatory work is the cornerstone of our redemption, for without His perfect sacrifice, God’s justice could not be satisfied and no reconciliation between Creator and creation could occur. Only a sinless Mediator, fully God and fully man, could bridge the chasm sin created and restore the relationship that was broken by human rebellion.
As the Son of God and second Person of the Godhead, Christ is uniquely equipped for this role. His divine nature grants Him authority to act on God’s behalf, while His human nature enables Him to identify with our frailty. This dual nature is the foundation of His mediatory work, allowing Him to represent humanity before God and to reveal God to us.
Christ’s life, death, and resurrection perfectly satisfy God’s justice and secures salvation for His elect. As William Ames declares, “Christ is our wisdom, righteousness, sanctification, and redemption.” Through His threefold office as Prophet, Priest, and King, Christ reveals God’s truth, offers Himself as the atoning sacrifice, and rules over His people with sovereign grace. As Prophet, He teaches the way of salvation; as Priest, He intercedes and atones; as King, He governs and protects.
In addition, His sacrifice opens the way for me to be reconciled to God, and His obedience ensures the efficacy of His atonement, making me acceptable to God through His righteousness alone. My salvation completely depends on His mediatory work, for no other can bridge the gap between a holy God and my sinful soul.
My response, therefore, must be to listen to His voice, to cling to His sacrifice, and to live under His kingship. For Christ is my living Mediator, daily interceding, teaching, and ruling in my life. Through Him I am reconciled to God, called to walk in His truth and to reflect His love, trusting in the sufficiency of His redemptive work.[1]
Contemplations:
- Christ’s divine dual nature. The seamless union of Christ’s divine and human natures amazes me. He is fully God, with authority to mediate, yet fully man, understanding my weaknesses. This unique position makes Him the perfect Mediator, bridging the gap between me and God. Lord Jesus, help me not take this reality for granted but rather to learn to trust in Your perfect mediation daily.
- Beloved of the Father. John 10:17 reveals the Father’s love for Christ, a love that extends to me through Him. Having experienced this divine love, I must be diligent to share it with others, letting it flow through my actions and words.
- Well-pleasing to God. Christ’s perfect obedience secures my acceptance before God. I know His sacrifice is sufficient, but do I truly rest in His finished work, or do I strive in my own strength? I must be reminded to rely on His righteousness alone.
- Hear Him. The Father’s command to “hear Him” calls me to embrace Christ’s teachings as my guide. His words are life and truth, yet I often neglect them. I must heed His voice, letting His truth shape my life and lead me to salvation.
Prayer (Supplication):
O Lord, You are the holy and sovereign God, whose justice demands perfection and whose love provides redemption. Your Son, Jesus Christ, is the divine Mediator, the only bridge between Your holiness and my sin. I come before You, seeking Your grace to rest in His perfect work. Grant me faith to trust in Christ alone, the One who laid down His life and took it up again, fulfilling Your will for my salvation.
I plead for Your Spirit to deepen my reliance on Christ’s mediatory work. Let me not seek to earn Your favor but cling to His righteousness, imputed to me. When doubts arise, fix my eyes on the cross, where justice and mercy met. When I stray, guide me back to His truth, that I may hear Him and follow. Make His voice clear in my heart, teaching me the way of salvation through His Word.
I ask for strength to live under Christ’s threefold office. As my Prophet, let Him instruct me, shaping my thoughts with divine wisdom. As my Priest, let His sacrifice cover my sins, and His intercession sustain me. As my King, let His rule govern my life, leading me in righteousness. Conform my heart to His, that I may reflect His love and obey His commands with joy.
Lord, I seek Your blessing for Your church, that we may honor Christ as our Mediator. Unite us in His truth, that we may grow in faith and love. Protect us from self-reliance, and teach us to depend on His finished work. Let our worship exalt Him, our lives testify to His grace, and our hearts rest in His sufficiency. May we proclaim His mediation to a lost world, pointing all to the Savior.
O God, make Christ my all in all. Let His love, displayed in His sacrifice, fill me with gratitude. Keep me from wandering, anchor me in His truth, and let my life glorify Him who mediates for me. I am Yours, redeemed by Your Son’s blood. Sustain me by Your grace, that I may walk worthy of His calling.
In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
