“But he said, Yea rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it.”
(Luke 11:28)

Obedience is not typically the first word that comes to mind when we think of thanksgiving. But in the words of Christ recorded in Luke 11:28, it becomes clear that obedience is a blessing from God—one that draws us into deeper fellowship with Him and secures His smile upon our lives. In response to a comment from one in the crowd that surrounds Him, Christ turns the attention away from external admiration and replies: “Yea rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it.” That is the real joy—the real treasure. The ones whom God blesses are those who not only hear His Word but walk in it.

What mercy it is to be given ears to hear! How many in the world today sit with their ears stopped, hearts dull, and minds distracted, unable or unwilling to hear God speak through His Word. But to the believer, God has granted that miracle of grace: spiritual hearing. The heart is opened, the will is stirred, and the eyes are enlightened. This is the result of the pure and loving work of God in us. That alone is a reason for thanksgiving.

Yet the grace does not stop there. God not only gives the hearing ear, but He enables the doing hand and the obedient heart. It is no small thing that we are not just hearers of the Word, but by the Spirit’s working, we are made doers. This obedience flows from love—a love God has poured into our hearts by the Holy Ghost given to us. True obedience springs from faith and affection. It is not the reluctant compliance of a servant under compulsion but the cheerful submission of a child who trusts and delights in his Father’s commands.

This means our obedience is not the result of natural willpower. Paul reminds us in Romans 12:2 that we are transformed “by the renewing of our minds.” Obedience is therefore a fruit of regeneration. And it is God’s mercy that gives us hearts that want to please Him. That kind of change—loving what God loves, hating what God hates, desiring to walk in holiness is divine grace in operation. Thanks be to God for His sanctifying work!

Moreover, we are not left without guidance. Christ does not call us to obey and then leave us to figure it out on our own. He gives us His Word, which is alive and powerful. It discerns our thoughts and intentions. It reveals God’s will and anchors our convictions. We do not follow shadows or whispers—we walk in the clear light of divine truth. Every precept, every command, every instruction is for our good. And in that, we rejoice.

Even when obedience is costly—even when it requires sacrifice—it is a blessed path. For as we keep His Word, we discover that His burden is light and His yoke is easy. We find peace. We find strength. We find that joy which is the peculiar reward of the faithful. What we give up to obey God can never compare to what we gain: communion with Christ, a clear conscience, and the favor of God.

So let us give thanks that we are not among those who stumble at the Word, but those who hear it and keep it. Let us give thanks that God did not leave us in rebellion but drew us by cords of love into willing obedience. Let us give thanks that His Spirit works in us both to will and to do of His good pleasure. And let us give thanks that Christ Himself, our elder Brother and faithful Savior, kept the Law perfectly for us and that His Spirit living in us continues to shape us in holiness.

In every act of obedience—every temptation resisted, every truth believed, every command kept—we see His grace at work. And for that grace we give thanks.

Contemplations:

  1. The Gift of Spiritual Hearing: I am deeply thankful that God opened my ears to His truth. Without this gift, I would be lost in ignorance and rebellion. It isn’t natural to hear His Word and respond favorably; it is a miracle of grace. May I always treasure the privilege of hearing and never take for granted His voice in the Scriptures.
  2. Obedience as a Joy, Not a Burden: It fills my heart with gratitude to know that obedience is not a heavy chain but a joyful path. God has changed my affections so that I desire what pleases Him. That transformation is worthy of daily thanksgiving.
  3. The Word That Guides My Life: God’s Word is a clear and sufficient guide. I’m thankful that in a world of confusion and darkness, He has given me the light of His truth. May I cling to it and keep it always.
  4. Christ My Pattern and Power: Christ lived a life of perfect obedience before the Father and now empowers me to walk in newness of life. When I fail, His righteousness covers me. When I succeed, it is His grace working in me. All glory and thanks belong to Him.

Prayer of Thanksgiving:

Gracious Father,

I come before You with a heart full of gratitude, rejoicing in the blessing of obedience made possible by Your mercy. You have not only spoken to me by Your Word, You have also given me the grace to hear it. You have awakened my heart to receive Your truth and given me the Spirit to walk in it. I thank You that You did not leave me in darkness or rebellion, but You called me to Yourself, taught me Your precepts, and showed me the beauty of holiness.

Thank You for the gift of Your Word—clear, sufficient, living, and powerful. Thank You for the way it searches me, comforts me, convicts me, and points me always to Christ. I’m grateful that You have not just revealed truth to me, You have also given me a heart that loves that truth. That love is a gift from You.

Thank You for Christ, who obeyed the Law perfectly in my place. He did what I never could. He loved You fully. He kept every command without fault. And He died for my disobedience so that I might live in freedom. Thank You that His obedience is counted as mine, and that His Spirit now works in me to mold me into His image.

Thank You that obedience is not something I must accomplish on my own. You supply the power. You give me the will. You sustain my desire. When I am weak, You are strong. When I stumble, You restore. When I am slow to obey, You patiently lead me back. For every victory, every act of faithfulness, every moment of repentance, I give You all the thanks and glory.

Help me never forget that obedience is a privilege. It is the evidence of Your love at work in me. It is the joy of a redeemed heart. May I never serve You with cold duty or forced effort, but with gladness and trust, knowing that Your commands are for my good and Your glory.

I thank You for the joy that comes in walking according to Your will. I thank You for the peace that guards my mind when I live in step with Your truth. I thank You for the growth that comes as I yield to Your Spirit. And I thank You for the promise that one day I will be perfectly conformed to the image of Your Son, fully obedient, and free from sin forever.

Until that day, keep me faithful. Help me treasure Your Word, to hear it with reverence, and to obey it with love. Let my life be a living thank-offering, pleasing in Your sight. In Jesus’ name I give thanks, Amen.
