“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
(John 3:16)
One of the most staggering truths of Scripture is that an all-sufficient, all-knowing God chose from eternity past to create the world and humanity, fully aware that man would fall into sin. Yet in that same eternal counsel, He purposed to redeem a people for Himself. The fall was no surprise to God, nor was His response reactive. His plan was settled, His love was fixed, and His glory would shine most brilliantly in the redemption of sinners through His Son.[1]
At the center of this divine plan is the only begotten Son of God—beloved, sinless, and eternal. There is no greater expression of divine love than this: that the Father gave His Son to bear the wrath we deserved, to die in our place, and to rise for our justification. Christ’s redemptive mission fulfilled the precise and perfect design of the sovereign Lord of heaven and earth, as the cross was God’s altar on which mercy and justice met. No clearer manifestation of God’s love exists.
The work of Christ—His sinless life, atoning death, and victorious resurrection—is at the heart of the Christian’s assurance. By His life He fulfilled God’s law to the letter, thereby satisfying divine justice, and with His death He sealed the New Covenant in His blood. “Without shedding of blood there is no remission” (Hebrews 9:22). Thus, the gospel paved the way for us to realize a reconciled relationship with a holy God.
Christ is the Surety for this Covenant of Grace, the Mediator between God and man, the spotless Lamb who was slain, and the One who now lives and intercedes for His people. Every mercy we receive, every grace that sustains us, every promise we claim, flows from His sacrifice. His blood bridged the infinite expanse between the Creator and the created so that, in Him, we are no longer estranged, but beloved.
This is the anchor of our faith—not our strength nor our resolve, but God’s unchanging will and Christ’s unbreakable work. “God so loved… that He gave.” That giving defines the gospel, secures our eternity, and calls forth our worship and praise.
Contemplation:
- The Immutable Plan. When I think about God’s sovereign will and how He preordained the sacrifice of Christ before man was even created, my faith is made stronger. This brings to mind John 3:16, which declares the Father’s infinite love in the unspeakable gift of His beloved Son to rescue those He chose before the foundation of the world to be His children.
- The Ultimate Act of Love. It is humbling to realize that not only did God love me enough to give up His only begotten Son for me, Christ also loved me so much that He was willing to suffer an excruciating death for me. The magnitude of both the Father’s and the Son’s love compels me to give my all for Him.
- The New Covenant. Understanding that Christ’s death secured a new covenant reminds me of the privilege I have as a believer. I am no longer bound by law but am free in Christ. This freedom allows me to live in the fullness of God’s grace.
- Christ, The Mediator. Knowing that Christ stands as the Mediator between my humanity and God Almighty brings me comfort and peace. He not only paid the price for my sin but continues to intercede on my behalf. This assures me of my standing with my heavenly Father and the eternal inheritance that awaits.
Prayer (Thanksgiving):
O gracious Father, I thank You with all my soul for the eternal love You have shown through the giving of Your Son. Before the foundations of the world were laid, You purposed a plan not only to create but to redeem, not only to permit the fall but to glorify Yourself in the salvation of sinners. I praise You for Your sovereign wisdom that saw all things and still determined to send Christ, Your only begotten, beloved Son, to be the Lamb slain for me.
Thank You, Lord Jesus, for laying down Your life willingly. You bore the wrath I deserved. You drank the cup of judgment that should have been mine. You lived sinlessly and died sacrificially for those whom the Father had given You. I thank You for fulfilling the Law perfectly and for shedding Your blood to seal the New Covenant—a covenant of grace, mercy, and eternal security. Every promise I now rest in flows from that covenant.
Thank You for securing my salvation fully, not leaving anything to chance or human strength. You are the anchor of my soul. Because of Your sacrifice, I am forgiven. Because of Your resurrection, I have life. Because of Your intercession, my relationship with You is secure and I am never alone. All glory belongs to You.
Thank You for the freedom this covenant brings—freedom from the bondage of guilt, fear, and condemnation. Thank You that I no longer stand condemned under the Law but am justified by grace. Thank You for the peace that flows from reconciliation and the joy of knowing I am loved with an everlasting love.
Thank You that my faith is secure because of Your unchanging will. You do not shift with the winds of time. You are the same yesterday, today, and forever. Your purposes cannot fail, and Your promises never lie.
Let gratitude rise in me daily. Let the cross never grow commonplace. Let the gospel never lose its wonder. Let the name of Jesus be ever sweet to my soul. And let me live each day as one purchased, pardoned, and preserved by sovereign grace.
In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
