“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves:
it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.”
(Ephesians 2:8-9)
Paul makes it clear in Ephesians that no amount of labor nor virtue of our own can earn salvation and acceptance with God (Isa. 64:6). Redemption is wholly the work of God, accomplished when sinners by faith receive the immeasurable gift of grace offered through Christ. This is the only way we who were once estranged can be reconciled to our Creator.
The giver of this priceless gift is Almighty God Himself: “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights” (James 1:17). What a wondrous truth that the infinitely holy God extends such grace to those described in Scripture as depraved, destitute, and disobedient.
The consequence of sin is complete and eternal separation from God, leaving man under the dominion of Satan, condemned to death and darkness. Yet grace intervened. God sent His Son, clothed in love, that sinners might be born anew, rescued from ruin, and seated with Christ in heavenly places. As Elisha Williams observed, “To be rescued from such a pitiable state, to be spiritually revived by Christ, and to be metaphorically seated with Him in heavenly realms is indeed an enormous blessing.”[1]
God’s gift of grace is not just the beginning of salvation but its every step. Even faith itself, the very hand that receives grace, is a gift from above. Sanctification, growth, perseverance—all are supplied by the same boundless fountain. Grace fuels every moment of the Christian life.
The world insists that all good things are earned, even God’s favor. But Paul reminds us that salvation is not something we can earn by our own merit or duty, but rather it is a gift, an undeserved outpouring of God’s love in our heart. It is only when we rest in this truth that we find freedom from pride and relief from despair.
Believers live enveloped in grace, not because of who they are or what they have done, but because of who God is. His love has no measure, and His grace has no end.
Contemplations:
- Salvation by grace. Lord, thank You for Your immeasurable grace. I acknowledge that my salvation is a gift from You and not a result of my deeds. Strengthen my heart to always remember this truth.
- God’s gift of faith. Father, in moments of doubt, remind me of Your boundless love. Thank You for the gift of faith You’ve blessed me with. Let my trust in You never waver.
- Daily blessings. Gracious God, each day reveals more of Your love and grace to me. Guide my steps and enlighten my heart. Help me recognize and cherish these daily blessings.
- A vessel of Your love and grace. Lord, make me a vessel of Your grace today. And let my actions reflect Your boundless love that You may guide others toward Your divine truth through my deeds.
Prayer (adoration)
O God of all grace, fountain of every mercy, I adore You for providing salvation not as a reward for works, not as payment for labor, but as a gift indescribable. Indeed, grace flows from Your throne like a river, free, unearned, and abundant. I am ever grateful that this grace has reached even me.
I adore You for Your holiness, which made my condition desperate, and for Your mercy, which made my salvation possible. In myself I was poor, blind, naked, and condemned to eternal separation. But in Christ I am clothed, cleansed, forgiven, and reconciled. I praise You that grace overcomes sin, light conquers darkness, and life swallows death.
I lift up my heart in wonder that You, the infinitely holy God, would stoop to rescue a vile sinner like me. I adore You that You sent Your Son as the embodiment of grace, full of truth and glory. On Him the wrath I deserved was spent, and through Him the blessing I did not deserve is given.
I praise You for also giving me faith. You opened my blind eyes to behold Christ, softened my stony heart to believe, and drew me by Your Spirit. I adore You for this faith that holds fast not by my strength but by Your sustaining power.
I also praise You for grace that not only saves but sanctifies. Each step of obedience, each growth in holiness, each perseverance in trial is the work of Your Spirit within me. I bow before Your wisdom that ordains both the beginning and the end of my salvation.
Lord, Your grace humbles pride and silences boasting. It strips me of self and crowns You with glory. It teaches me to rest, not in myself, but in Christ who is my righteousness. It fills me with joy, for salvation is secure, purchased by grace, kept by grace, perfected by grace.
I adore You for grace daily poured out: grace in providence, grace in trial, grace in forgiveness, grace in strength, grace in hope. My life is encircled by it. My eternity rests on it. And my heart rejoices in it.
O Lord, I lift my soul to worship You. You are my salvation, my refuge, and my song. To You belongs blessing, honor, glory, and praise, forever and ever.
In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
