“God is jealous, and the LORD revenges; the LORD revenges, and is furious; the LORD will take vengeance on his adversaries, and he reserves wrath for his enemies.”
(Nahum 1:2)

Nahum’s prophecy announces the downfall of Assyria, but its greater message lies in the revelation of God’s justice and protective love. The Lord is jealous, not with the envy of men but with holy zeal for His people, His truth, and His glory. His vengeance is none other than righteous retribution rendered against sin and corruption.

Moreover, the protective love of God secures a place of refuge for those who trust in Him, even as it brings terror to His enemies. “The Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; and he knows them that trust in him” (Nahum 1:7). The same God who strikes terror into the hearts of His adversaries is a sure and steadfast fortress for His saints. His fury against sin testifies to His love for righteousness. And His wrath against the wicked is the shadow cast by the fierce love He has for His own.

What this means is that God’s judgments, though fearful, serve the greater purpose of redemption and restoration. His purposes are not for destruction but for holiness, not for ruin but renewal. Only those who oppose Him experience His wrath; those who trust Him find in Him strong consolation.

William Gouge noted that “God’s absolute sovereignty, almighty power, infinite justice, incomprehensible wisdom, perfect hatred of sin, indulgent care over his Church, and other like divine properties give proof of this.”[1] So to know God rightly is to rest secure under His jealous love even while trembling at His justice.

A fuller understanding of God’s jealousy can move us from a place of dread to that of assurance. Friends of God have nothing to fear from His power, for the same divine hand that strikes the wicked shields His people. “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear what man shall do unto me.”

Contemplations:

  1. The finger of God. When judgment is executed on the church’s enemies, we should take notice that it is wrought by the finger of the Lord… and give Him the glory for all His works.
  2. A reverent fear. Lord, You demonstrate a great and mighty terror against sin and for this reason I hold a reverential fear of You. Your enemies must surely be dismayed that You possess infinite power to execute vengeance on all unrighteousness.
  3. No escape. What can the wicked do to avoid the heavy strokes of God’s fury? Absolutely nothing apart from humbling themselves before Him. Otherwise His vengeance is endless, without mercy or remedy. It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

Prayer (supplication)

O Lord, mighty and jealous God, I bow before Your holy name, pleading for Your protection. You are a consuming fire to Your adversaries, but to those who trust in You, You are their refuge and stronghold. I come to You not in my own strength, for I have none, but in the name of Jesus Christ, Your Son, who shields me from wrath and secures me in Your love.

Keep me, Lord, under Your protective hand. Guard my heart against sin, which provokes Your holy anger. Defend me against Satan, the deceiver and destroyer, who would draw me away from Your truth. Preserve me from the snares of the world and from the corruption of my own flesh. I cannot stand against these enemies unless You uphold me with Your strength.

O Lord, rise up and scatter those who oppose Your church. When judgment falls on Your adversaries, help me remember it is Your hand at work. Keep me from fear when nations rage and enemies gather, for You are sovereign over all. Teach me to give You glory in every act of justice and to see Your finger in every deliverance.

I pray for a reverent fear of You. Let me never treat lightly what kindles Your wrath. Let me live with holy awe, knowing You are infinitely powerful to punish unrighteousness, and in that fear give me comfort, for Your power is my protection. Your fury against sin is proof of Your love for holiness and for Your people.

Preserve Your church, O Lord, and watch over Your people. Be our stronghold in the day of trouble. Let us not fear what man can do, for You are our helper. Arm us with faith, gird us with hope, and keep us steadfast in love.

Surround me with Your power. Uphold me with Your hand. And let Your jealous love guard me unto eternal life.

I plead all this in the name of Your Son, who bore wrath in my place and purchased everlasting refuge for my soul.

In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
