“And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing: and he doeth according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth: and none can stay his hand, or say unto him, What doest thou?”
(Daniel 4:35)

God reigns as the supreme source of all blessings, the eternal fountain from which every good gift flows (James 1:17). His sovereign goodness permeates creation, as the psalmist proclaims, “The Lord is good to all, and his tender mercies are over all his works” (Ps. 145:9,16).

While blessings may seem to come through human hands or natural means, their true origin is God himself, the embodiment of infinite goodness. No one can challenge His will or thwart His purposes, for He acts according to His sovereign pleasure, both in heaven and on earth. This truth reveals a God who is intimately involved with His creation, pouring out His benefits to display His glory and love.

God’s act of creation was not born of need, for He is self-sufficient, lacking nothing. He brought the world into being to manifest His glorious perfections, as Revelation 4:11 declares, “For his pleasure all things are and were created.” From the smallest creature to the vast cosmos, all exist to reflect His goodness. Yet, the greatest expression of His benevolence is the gift of His Son, Jesus Christ.

Before the foundation of the world, God purposed to redeem humanity through Christ’s sacrifice, a plan rooted in His sovereign grace. After Adam’s disobedience brought wrath and death, God could have justly condemned all to eternal misery. Instead, He chose to send His Son to endure a shameful death, securing pardon and eternal life for His elect (John 3:16). William Gouge rightly said, “The sure prop that man has to rest on God for happiness is by reason of his covenant.” This covenant, sealed in Christ’s blood, is the ultimate testament to God’s boundless love and mercy.[1]

Contemplations:

  1. Sovereign source of all. Lord, You are the Sovereign creator of all, the preserver of all life, and the sole source of all human strength and ability. So it follows that we, in turn, ought to gladly “spend and be spent” for You and the glory and advancement of Your kingdom. Your infinite goodness inspires me to live wholly for You, reflecting Your generosity in my service.
  2. Blessings through Christ. Surely, Lord, it is a tribute to Your free, sovereign grace and bounty that in and through the mediation of Jesus Christ I have opportunity to enjoy a bounty of spiritual blessing and benefit which are now mine through Him. Your gift of salvation through Your Son fills me with awe, as I receive what I could never earn.
  3. Mercy despite my sin. Lord, it is the sovereign goodness in Christ that, in spite of my deserved destruction, He promises to receive me to favor and make me eternally happy if I submit to the most reasonable and gracious terms which He offers me. Your mercy transforms my destiny, turning wrath into blessing through Jesus.
  4. Rewarder of seekers. Lord, I know that Christ is reconciling men to Himself. He does not call men to seek Him in vain but declares there is forgiveness with Him that He may be feared (Psalm 130:4). I am both amazed and grateful that You are a rewarder of those that diligently seek You (Heb. 11:6). Your faithfulness to those who pursue You stirs my heart to worship.

Prayer (Adoration)

O mighty and merciful God, You are the sovereign Lord whose will governs all creation, unchallenged and unchangeable. Your goodness flows like an endless river, blessing every work of Your hand with tender mercies. I adore You as the fountain of all benefits, the One who gives life, breath, and every good gift without need or lack in Yourself. Your creation sings of Your glory, and Your gift of Jesus Christ, the Savior, reveals the depths of Your love. I stand in awe that You chose to redeem sinners through the costly sacrifice of Your Son.

I confess that I have often failed to honor You as the source of all blessings. My heart has attributed Your gifts to chance or my own efforts, neglecting to give You the glory due Your name. I have not always sought You diligently, nor have I spent myself fully for Your kingdom. Forgive me for my ingratitude and pride, for diminishing Your sovereign goodness. Cleanse me through Christ’s blood, renewing my heart to worship You alone.

Lord, I plead for grace to live in constant adoration of Your benevolence. Fill me with wonder at Your creation, that I may see Your hand in every blessing. Deepen my gratitude for Christ’s mediation, through which I receive Your favor. Help me submit to Your gracious terms, seeking You with all my heart. Let my life reflect Your goodness that I may serve Your kingdom with joy. Guard me from self-reliance and keep my eyes fixed on You, the Rewarder of those who seek You until I see You in glory.

In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
