“While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled.”
(John 17:12)

Union with Christ is the crown of all spiritual blessings. It is the fountain from which every grace flows and the anchor that secures every promise. When the Lord Jesus declared in prayer, “I kept them in thy name,” He was declaring His divine guardianship over those given Him by the Father—an unbreakable union formed by electing love and secured by covenant faithfulness. Christ, as Mediator and Redeemer, both called and joined His people to Himself. “This life, which proceeds from being a partaker of the divine nature, flows out of union with Christ.”[1]

“He that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit” (1 Cor. 6:17). The life of the believer flows from being spiritually grafted into the living Christ. It is no longer “I that live, but Christ who lives in me” (Gal. 2:20). As Christ lives, so the believer lives. As Christ reigns, so the believer perseveres. As Christ intercedes, so the believer is preserved.

The Son of God says, “I give unto them eternal life, and they shall never perish” (John 10:28). Why? Because they are in Him. “Because I live, ye shall live also” (John 14:19). Eternal life is not only granted by Christ; it is shared with Christ. Augustine rightly said, “No one is truly of the body of Christ who will not be with Him forever.”

This union is not subject to the frailty of man’s will but rests on the faithfulness of God’s decree and the omnipotence of Christ’s power. The believer is kept “by the power of God through faith unto salvation” (1 Pet. 1:5). And the Lord Jesus Christ, as the Author and Finisher of our faith (Heb. 12:2), will complete what He has begun. He secures the beginning of faith by regeneration and the end by preservation. “That of all which He hath given me I should lose nothing,” He said, “but should raise it up again at the last day” (John 6:39).

Because of this union, the believer finds strength in trial, hope in despair, comfort in sorrow, and certainty in death. What affliction can sever a soul from Christ? What temptation can destroy one preserved by grace? What death can conquer one united to the Resurrection and the Life? Nothing! For nothing in heaven, earth, or hell shall “separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Rom. 8:39).

Contemplations:

  1. Union Means Security. To be united with Christ is to be kept by Christ. My safety does not rest on my resolve, my record, or my strength. It rests in Him. I am joined to the One who cannot fail. The world may shake, my flesh may falter, but the bond between Christ and His people will not be broken.
  2. Temptation Cannot Undo It. Satan tempts, the world lures, and the flesh stumbles… but union with Christ remains. He has prayed, “Keep them from the evil one” (John 17:15), a prayer which is heard, honored, and answered by the Father. I can resist the devil because Christ keeps me. His intercession shields me and His Spirit strengthens me.
  3. Christ’s Life Is Mine. Because He lives, I live. My union with Him means that His risen life pulses through my soul. I walk by His strength, breathe by His Spirit, and persevere by His grace. Christ is my ever-present Redeemer in whom I dwell.
  4. I Will Be With Him Forever. This union will not be dissolved in death nor dismissed at judgment for it is an eternal bond. Christ is not ashamed to call me His, and He will never lose me. One day I will be with Him because He will never let me go.

Prayer (Adoration):

Lord Jesus Christ, You are the Vine and I am a branch that you have grafted into Yourself by sovereign mercy. I adore You, O Shepherd of my soul, that You have guarded me from the enemy, from death, and from my own self-destruction. You pray for me, You intercede for me, and You sustain me with Your power.

I adore You, for in You I have life eternal, I am clothed in Your righteousness, and I’m kept in Your peace that passes understanding. Because You live, I live. You reign, and I rejoice. You will not lose one of Your own, and will raise me up on the last day. My union with You is my greatest treasure. I am not alone. I am not adrift. I am Yours.

You are the Author of my faith, and You will finish it. You have begun a good work in me and You will complete it. I praise You that no force can tear me from You. No accusation can separate me, no temptation can overpower You, and no suffering can cancel Your promise.

In You I find the sweet security that my soul longs for as I am held by Your everlasting arms. When I stumble, You keep me. When I wander, You restore me. And when I despair, You lift me. You are in me and I in You. This bond is eternal and my fellowship with You is unbreakable.

So I lift my voice in praise to You, my faithful Redeemer, who joins me to Yourself and will never let me go. My soul magnifies You, O Christ, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior. I love You because You first loved me, and I am forever Yours.

In Jesus name I pray, Amen.
