“Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honor and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.”
(Revelation 4:11)

God stands as the first cause and final end of all creation, sovereign over every atom and event. All things exist by His will and for His glory. As an artist holds dominion over his canvas, driven by the purpose of his work, so God, the Creator, exercises absolute authority over His universe. Revelation 4:11 declares, “for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.” Proverbs 16:4 echoes, “The Lord hath made all things for himself.” And Psalm 95:3-4 proclaims, “For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods. In his hand are the deep places of the earth.” Known as Adonai, the Lord Master, God sustains all things by His power, directing them to His eternal purposes.

This sovereignty extends beyond creation to redemption. God not only formed humanity but also redeemed His people through the blood of Christ. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 states, “Ye are not your own. For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.” Stephen Charnock explains, “By this He acquired a right of another kind, and brought us from that uncontrollable lordship we affected over ourselves by the sin of Adam, that He might use us as His own peculiar people for His own glory and service; by this redemption there results to God a right over our bodies, over our spirits, over our services, as well as by creation.”[1]

God’s glory is the ultimate purpose of all things, yet He graciously bestows blessings on His people. He grants life, sustains it by His Spirit, and works through Christ to preserve His redeemed. His sovereignty could have left the world to collapse into nothingness or destroyed both fallen angels and fallen humanity. Instead, He sent His Son to redeem a people for Himself. The fallen angels remain in rebellion, but God’s grace singles out His elect, restoring them through Christ’s blood. This act of sovereign mercy magnifies His glory, displaying His power and love to all His people.

The universe, from the stars to the smallest creature, exists to serve God’s purposes. His dominion is absolute, His will unthwarted. Believers, as redeemed creatures, owe all to Him—body, soul, and service. To live for any other end is to defy the Creator’s design, for all things flow from Him and return to Him for His glory.

Contemplations

  1. My life for Your glory. I’m humbled that You created me for Your pleasure, Lord, as Revelation 4:11 says. And still, I often live for myself. My heart strays from Your purpose, seeking my glory instead of Yours. Forgive me for forgetting I’m Yours, body and soul. Teach me to live wholly for You, reflecting Your majesty in all I do.
  2. Your sovereign redemption. I stand in awe that You bought me with Christ’s blood (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). I’m guilty of acting as if I own myself, ignoring Your rightful claim over me. Break this pattern, Lord, and conform me to Your Son that I may live for Your glory alone.
  3. Your preserving power. You hold all things in Your hand, Lord, sustaining me daily (Psalm 95:3-4). And yet I take Your care for granted, living as if I’m self-sufficient. My ingratitude shames me. Awaken my heart to adore Your power that keeps me, and help me honor You as my Creator and Preserver.
  4. Your unmatched dominion. Your throne is absolute, Lord, ruling over all creation. As Psalm 95:3 reminds me, You are King above all. Forgive my pride and mold me to bow before Your lordship, living for Your glory as Your redeemed.

Prayer (adoration)

O sovereign God, You are the Creator of all, worthy of all glory, honor, and power. Your majesty fills the heavens, and Your will governs every star and soul. I exalt You, for as Revelation 4:11 declares, You created all things for Your pleasure. You are the first cause and final end, and I stand in awe of Your absolute dominion over all.

I adore You for Your Son, Jesus Christ, whose blood redeemed a people for Your glory. You might have left me in my sin, as You did the fallen angels, yet Your grace chose me. I marvel at Your mercy, which bought me, body and soul, as 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 proclaims. Your love is boundless, Your power unmatched, and I worship You for claiming me as Your own.

You are the Great Preserver, holding all creation in Your hand. Psalm 95:3-4 reveals Your kingship, sustaining every life by Your might. I praise You for Your steadfast care, which upholds me daily. Your sovereignty could have returned the world to nothingness, but You set Your glory in it through Christ. I bow before Your wisdom that directs all things to Your praise.

Your throne is unassailable, Your authority supreme. I exalt You for Your unchanging nature, for Your grace that redeems and preserves Your people. You are Adonai, Lord Master, and I worship You for Your glory that shines through all creation. Conform my heart to Your Son’s, that I may live for Your honor alone.

In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
