“How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?” (Hebrews 9:14)

From God’s vantage point, no matter how good or respectable we may appear, our conscience is defiled because of Adam’s fall. This is a fundamental spiritual reality inherited at birth, stained by original sin. We enter this world with a corrupt conscience by nature and carry the sentence of death from our first breath.

As we mature, this corruption manifests itself in such selfish behaviors and attitudes as pride, envy, anger, bitterness, and self-pity… outward evidences of our inherently defiled conscience. Thus, without the intervention of divine grace, even our noblest attempts at righteousness amount only to what Scripture calls “dead works” (Hebrews 9:14). Left to ourselves, our spiritual state is helpless and hopeless.

How, then, can we ever hope for cleansing? How can our guilty conscience be made pure and acceptable before a holy God? Scripture provides the answer clearly and plainly: only the blood of Jesus has the power to cleanse the human conscience. The writer to the Hebrews declares unequivocally, “How much more shall the blood of Christ… purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God!” (Hebrews 9:14). This cleansing is possible only through the sprinkling of Christ’s blood upon the heart and soul.

Hebrews 10:22 further confirms that believers must have their “hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience.” Here we see vividly that Christ’s blood is the only cleansing agent sufficient to purify our sinful hearts.

Ezekiel prophesied of this powerful cleansing: “I will sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean from all your filthiness” (Ezekiel 36:25). Francis Whiddon, a Westminster Divine, affirmed this truth, saying, “These two, Christ’s blood and Christ’s Spirit, will cleanse the most foul sinner and the most defiled conscience.”[1]

The apostle Paul reminded the Corinthians of their former sinful condition: “fornicators, idolaters, effeminate, accusers of themselves with mankind, thieves, covetous, drunkards, revilers, extortioners” (1 Corinthians 6:9–10). Yet, he immediately assured them that they were now cleansed by Christ’s blood and Spirit: “But ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God” (1 Corinthians 6:11). Through Christ, we are indeed washed thoroughly clean, leaving no trace of guilt.

Even after our initial cleansing, God provides ongoing means of sanctification to keep our conscience pure. These means of grace include His Word, faith, and repentance. Christ Himself affirms this in John 15:3, saying, “Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you”—that is, through the Spirit-empowered Word. Likewise, we purify our hearts by faith in God’s promises (Acts 15:9). Repentance, as expressed to disobedient Judah, is also vital: “Wash you, make you clean; put away the evil of your doings” (Isaiah 1:16). Then God assures, “though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow” (Isaiah 1:18).

The burden of a guilty conscience need not overwhelm us. Christ’s atoning blood offers us peace and a genuinely purified conscience. By trusting wholly in Him, we are fully cleansed and enabled to serve God freely and joyfully. As the old hymn declares, “What can wash away my sins? Nothing but the blood of Jesus!”

Contemplations:

  1. The stain within. I recognize, Lord, that no matter how outwardly upright I seem, my conscience is stained by original sin. Even my most sincere deeds, apart from Christ, are dead works. Remind me daily of my absolute dependence on the cleansing blood of Christ. Help me never rely on morality or “goodness” but always cling to the cross of Christ as my sole refuge and hope.
  2. The sufficiency of Christ’s blood. I marvel that Your blood alone has the power to cleanse my guilty conscience. There is no other remedy, no other savior, no other comfort. Impress upon my heart the infinite worth and efficacy of Your sacrifice. Teach me to treasure the blood of Christ above all things, and to rest fully upon its cleansing power in every trial and temptation.
  3. Word, faith, and repentance. Lord, You have given means to maintain the purity of my conscience: the Word, faith, and repentance. Help me diligently use these means of grace, daily seeking cleansing through the truths of Scripture, genuine faith, and heartfelt repentance.
  4. The comfort of a pure conscience. A defiled conscience is burdensome and oppressive. But You, Lord, have provided the means of true freedom and peace through Your blood and Your Spirit. Strengthen my faith that I may walk each day with a conscience purified and cleansed. Grant me assurance of Your grace, and let the peace of Christ dwell richly within me as I seek to serve and glorify You.

Prayer (Supplication):

Almighty and merciful Father, I approach Your throne knowing full well the impurity of my conscience apart from Your grace. Born into sin, stained from my first breath, I stand in desperate need of cleansing. No work of mine, however noble, can remove the deep-rooted guilt that resides within. I plead nothing of my own righteousness, but cast myself wholly upon the merit of Your beloved Son.

Lord, the blood of Christ alone purges my guilty conscience from dead works. I beg You, apply that cleansing power fully and continually to my heart. Sprinkle me afresh, that I might serve You without fear or condemnation. Let the perfect offering of Your Son’s spotless blood satisfy all demands of justice against me. Let His eternal sacrifice silence every accusation from within and from without.

Father, I confess that even my best intentions, apart from Your grace, remain polluted and worthless. My pride, bitterness, envy, and self-pity betray the corruption of my fallen nature. Left to myself, I would perish beneath the weight of my guilt. But blessed be Your name, You have provided the perfect remedy—the precious blood of Jesus Christ. Pour it anew upon my heart and conscience.

Great Physician, heal the wounds that sin has inflicted upon my soul. Holy Spirit, apply the water promised by Ezekiel to my heart that I may be cleansed from all filthiness. Sanctify me continually through Your Word, build up my faith, and grant me sincere repentance. Make my heart tender to Your promptings, eager to turn from all sin.

Lord Jesus, intercede before the Father for me without ceasing. Let Your blood and righteousness cover all my failures. Holy Spirit, transform my inner being, producing peace and holiness in my conscience. Keep me close to the cross, where sin is cleansed and guilt is forever removed.

Grant me a deep and lasting assurance of my forgiveness. Teach me to rely on nothing but Christ’s finished work. Remove every doubt and fear, and establish my confidence firmly upon Your promises. Let my conscience be clear, free from accusation, anchored securely in Your everlasting mercy.

I ask also, Lord, for grace to resist temptation. Strengthen me to guard the purity You have so graciously granted. Let me never presume upon Your mercy, but rather, out of deep gratitude, pursue holiness with all diligence. Keep my conscience sensitive, tender, and quick to respond to conviction.

Father, hear my supplication. Purify, preserve, and perfect me by the power of Christ’s cleansing blood. For His sake and in His name, I plead these mercies, trusting wholly in Your infinite grace.

In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
