“Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them shall fall on the ground without your Father.”
(Matthew 10:29)

How concerned is an all-knowing God with the incidentals of your life? Matthew 10:29 gives us some insight into that question. In this verse Jesus references sparrows, small birds used by the very poor for sacrifices because they were so cheap. Two sparrows sold for a farthing, the least valuable coin in biblical times, and five for two farthings (Luke 12:6).

But even these seemingly insignificant creatures do not fall to the ground without the will of the Father. This reminds us that His sovereignty encompasses all things—every action, every event, every joy, every sorrow. He is mindful of every detail in His world, for were there even one atom in the universe outside His control, He would not be God.

And God is not only aware of all that happens in His creation, He governs it. Not only does He take notice of everything, He exercises His providence over it all. As Augustine put it, “No free will of the creature can resist the will of God; for man cannot so will, or negate, as to obstruct the divine determination, or overcome God’s divine power.” That is to say, nothing and no one can undo what God has ordained, as Psalm 115:3 affirms, “But our God is in the heavens: he hath done whatsoever he hath pleased.”

This great doctrine of God’s providence is a source of profound comfort for the believer. The same God who rules the stars also governs the flight of the sparrow. The One who ordains the rising and falling of empires is the same Father who counts the hairs of your head and provides for your needs. His power and care extend even to your smallest concerns.

Let this remind us that nothing in our life is unknown or ungoverned by Him. Every disappointment, every joy, every moment that seems random or insignificant—all are held in His hands. Therefore, the child of God can be assured that nothing happens by chance… “That nothing happens by chance, though the causes may be concealed, but by the will of God; by his secret will which we are unable to explore, but adore with reverence, and by his will which is conveyed to us in the Law and in the Gospel.”[1]

And in all these things, God is working out His perfect plan according to His perfect will for His glory and our good.

Contemplation:

  1. God’s Will in the Smallest Things. I often forget how deeply God is involved in the smallest events of my life. I may overlook details, but He never does. If He governs the sparrows, He surely governs me. Lord, help me remember, especially in moments of anxiety or confusion, that nothing happens without Your knowledge or decree. That truth should quiet my fears and help me rest in Your care.
  2. Thanking God for His Sovereignty. God’s sovereignty is the reason for my hope and peace. I’m thankful, Lord, that Your will cannot be overturned. When the world feels chaotic, Your throne is unmoved. When I feel weak, Your hand is strong. And when I lose my way, Your providence leads me back. Thank You for ruling wisely and lovingly in all things.
  3. Providence as Comfort. Every hardship that enters my life comes only through the hands of my Father. I don’t always understand Your purposes, Lord, but I know You are guiding all things for my eternal good. Nothing is wasted; even the hard things are from Your hand. That gives me reason to thank You in everything, because You are always at work.
  4. Gratitude for God’s Attention. It amazes me, Lord, that You attend to the falling of a sparrow and the blooming of wildflowers. How much more do You then attend to me, one of Your redeemed children? You see me. You care for me. You provide for me. You discipline me and draw me near. I will not let a day pass without thanking You for being so near, so constant, and so faithful.

Prayer (Thanksgiving)

Gracious Father, I give You thanks for Your sovereign will that rules over all things. I praise You that nothing falls to the ground, not even the smallest bird, apart from Your divine permission. How comforting it is to know that You, who are infinite in power and perfect in wisdom, also care for the details of my life in every moment and every need.

Thank You, Lord, for the assurance that Your will is not just supreme, but also good. You do not act rashly. Everything You ordain is right, holy, and wise. Even when I don’t understand the purpose behind what You allow, I trust that Your purposes are higher than mine, and that You work all things together for good for those who love You and are called according to Your purpose.

Thank You for teaching me, through Your Word, that Your providence reaches down into every area of my life. You govern not only the rise and fall of kingdoms but also the simple events that unfold each day. You count the hairs on my head. You see my tears. You hear my prayers. And You provide all I need, whether in feast or famine, comfort or trial.

I thank You that Your will cannot be frustrated or overthrown. Even the rebellion of men and the schemes of Satan are tools in Your hand. In a world that seems unpredictable, Your unchanging will is my anchor. Thank You that I do not have to fear the future, because the future is also in Your hands.

Thank You for giving me comfort in affliction. When trials come, I am held in Your providence. Every sorrow is measured. Every joy is appointed. Every loss, every gain, every delay, and every answer to prayer flows from the hand of a Father who does all things well. Help me receive them all with gratitude, trusting in Your wisdom and praising You for Your intimate care.

Above all, thank You for revealing this truth in Christ. He submitted to Your will, even unto death, so that I might know Your love and belong to You forever. In Him I see that Your will is not only sovereign but saving. It is full of mercy, overflowing with grace, and perfectly executed for the redemption of Your people.

May my life reflect continual thanks for Your providence. May I never take Your rule for granted. And may I trust You more, praise You more, and love You more because You govern all things according to the counsel of Your own will.

In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
