“The LORD on high is mightier than the noise of many waters,
yea, than the mighty waves of the sea.”
(Psalm 93:4)
Creation constantly proclaims the majesty of the Creator. The winds that sweep across the earth, the storms that darken the skies, the lightning that flashes through the heavens, and the seas that rise in power all testify to divine command. Nature is not independent, random, or self-governing; every element serves its sovereign Lord.
In Psalm 93, the psalmist especially directs attention to the sea. Few earthly sights appear more powerful than the “mighty waves of the sea.” It lifts its waters, roars in strength, tosses ships, and fills men with fear. Yet the waves rise only by His permission and fall at His command.[1]
Men fear storms, wind, and seas because they cannot control them. Yet God gathers the winds in His hand and appoints their courses. He commands the rain, weighs the waters, and establishes boundaries for the seas. Storms become instruments of His providence. The whirlwind belongs to Him. The thunder obeys Him. The lightning travels the paths He appoints.
The One who rebuked the sea saying, “Peace, be still,” demonstrated His authority openly. The winds ceased and the sea obeyed immediately, causing the disciples to ask, “What manner of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him?”
We often see storms as nothing more than natural events, yet Scripture tells us that the Lord raises the storm and calms it. He sends the winds and stills them. Nothing in creation operates independently of His will.
Life itself often resembles troubled waters. Circumstances rise unexpectedly. Fears increase. Yet above every disturbance stands the Lord, mightier than all. The One who said “peace, be still” is able to calm the storms of life just as He did the storm on the sea.
Psalm 93:4 calls us to adore the sovereign Lord whose power rules wind, sea, storm, and providence alike. The floods may lift their voice, but God is higher still. His throne remains unmoved while all creation obeys His command.
Contemplations:
- The Majesty of God in Creation. When I see storm clouds gathering, hear the strong winds, or stand near the sea, I feel small before creation’s power. Yet this passage reminds me that God is above them all. The sea that terrifies men obeys Him completely.
- My Forgetfulness of Providence. I often focus on circumstances themselves instead of on the God who governs them. Troubles appear great because I look at the waves instead of the Lord above them. Yet this scripture reminds me that every storm is under God’s authority.
- My Comfort in God’s Rule. Life can feel unsettled and uncertain, but the Lord who calms the sea remains unchanged. I find comfort knowing that the One who rules the oceans also rules every detail of my life.
- My Desire to Praise Publicly. This psalm calls me to exalt God openly for His mighty works. I realize I often enjoy His providences quietly without speaking enough about His greatness. Creation itself declares His glory continually. I want my life to do the same.
Prayer (Adoration):
Most high and sovereign Lord, I adore You as the ruler of heaven and earth. The winds obey You. The seas submit to You. Storms rise and fall according to Your command. The mighty waters that terrify men remain beneath Your authority.
I praise You because Your power is beyond all comparison. Men fear the sea and tremble before storms, yet You gather the winds in Your hand and appoint their paths. The oceans remain within boundaries You established. Nothing in creation acts apart from Your will.
Lord, I adore You for the wisdom displayed in Your providence. You govern the seasons, send the rain, direct the winds, and sustain every creature. The world continues because You uphold it continually by Your power.
Lord Jesus, I worship You as the One who rebuked the sea and brought calm with a word. Your authority over the wind revealed Your divine glory openly.
I adore You because Your power is joined with goodness; You are a gracious and wise King. So I am grateful that the same hand governing creation governs my life. The One who rules the sea also rules providence. No fear, sorrow, or uncertainty escapes Your care.
Finally, I adore You because Your greatness deserves public praise. Let my heart speak often of Your works and proclaim Your majesty before others. May my life join creation itself in declaring that the Lord on high is mightier than the mighty waves of the sea.
In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
