“Wherein God, willing more abundantly to shew unto the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel, confirmed it by an oath: That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us.”
(Hebrews 6:17-18)
This passage in Hebrews affirms that the believer’s consolation does not rest on our changing circumstances but on the unchangeable character of God. Indeed, the foundation of our faith is found in the faithfulness of God, revealing His nature in a way that faith may grasp.[1] He presents His truth as a firm ground for trust, rooted in the immutable counsel of God and secured by His own oath.
That is to say, God has not only spoken; He also confirmed His word in ways that support our weakness. Though His word alone is sufficient, He adds an oath, not for His own sake but for ours. By this, He provides what the text calls “strong consolation.” The heirs of promise are not left to wrestle with doubt without support. They are given a double assurance: the unchanging purpose of God and the unbreakable truth of His word. In both, it is impossible for God to lie.
The written Word further strengthens this assurance. God has committed His promises to Scripture, giving them a fixed and enduring form. This secures their accessibility and clarity for the believer. And like a river that presses through every obstacle, the truth of God continues, unaffected by opposition. It remains the same across all generations, steady and reliable.
The confirmation of these promises reaches its highest expression in the work of Christ. His death is not only the means of redemption but also the ratification of the covenant. As a testament becomes effective through the death of the one who makes it, so the promises of God are sealed and made sure through the cross. Christ’s blood stands as a witness that what God has promised, He will certainly fulfill.
The believer is also given personal confirmations of this faithfulness through experience. Answers to prayer, strength in temptation, deliverance in danger, and the inward assurance of forgiveness all testify to the truth of God’s promises. Each act of faithfulness serves as a pledge of what is yet to come. The soul is called to remember these mercies, to record them inwardly, and to use them as evidence against present fears.
Moreover, God does not merely declare His faithfulness; He demonstrates it repeatedly. He calls His people to bear witness to what He has done, to acknowledge His truth, and to rest in His promises with confidence. Because God is unchangeable, the hope promised His people is secure.
This certainty of God’s promises removes the instability that would otherwise dominate the soul. It provides a foundation that does not shift and a hope that does not disappoint and is the result of God’s desire to reveal His faithfulness in ways that strengthen and sustain His people.
Contemplations:
- Thanksgiving for Divine Faithfulness. Faithful God, thank You that Your promises are grounded in Your unchanging nature. You have revealed Yourself as truth itself, and in this I find great comfort. Let my heart rest in the certainty that what You have spoken will surely come to pass. Teach me to give thanks continually for this unshakable foundation, and to trust You more fully in every circumstance.
- Gratitude for Confirmed Promises. Lord, I praise You that You have not only spoken but confirmed Your promises by an oath. You have stooped to strengthen my weak faith, giving assurance upon assurance. This kindness reveals Your care for my fragile faith. Let me not take this lightly, but receive it with gratitude and confidence. Fix my mind on these confirmations, that I may stand firm when doubts arise and give thanks for the security You have provided.
- Thanksgiving for Christ’s Seal. Gracious Savior, thank You that Your death sealed the promises of God. Your blood stands as an everlasting witness that the covenant is sure. Through You, every promise finds its certainty and fulfillment. Let my heart be filled with gratitude for this great work, and let me look to You as the foundation of all my hope. Strengthen my assurance as I consider what You have accomplished.
- Gratitude for Experienced Mercy. Lord, thank You for the many ways You have already shown Your faithfulness in my life. You have answered prayers, sustained me in weakness, and delivered me in times of need. These mercies are testimonies of Your truth. Help me remember them rightly, record them in my heart, and give thanks for them always. And may they strengthen my faith in what You will yet do.
Prayer (Thanksgiving)
Most faithful and unchanging God, I give thanks for the certainty of Your promises and the strength of the consolation You have provided. You have not left Your people to uncertainty, nor have You expected them to rest on shifting foundations. Instead, You have grounded their hope in Your own immutable nature. This is a mercy beyond measure, for it assures me that what You have spoken cannot fail.
I am thankful that You revealed Your faithfulness in ways that my weakness can grasp. You have spoken Your promises, committed them to writing, confirmed them with an oath, and sealed them through the death of Christ. Each of these is a testimony to Your desire that I should be fully assured. You have provided more than enough to silence doubt and strengthen faith. For this abundant provision, I give You praise.
I am grateful that Your Word stands firm across all generations. Though circumstances change and opposition arises, Your truth remains unchanged. Nothing can overturn what You have declared. This gives stability to my soul and confidence in every season of life. I thank You that I can rely on Your Word without fear of disappointment.
Thank You for the work of Christ, by which Your promises are confirmed and made sure. His death established the covenant, ensuring that what You have promised will be fulfilled. Through Him, I have access to every blessing You have declared. This is a gift of grace that I could never earn, and for which I offer heartfelt thanksgiving.
I also give thanks for the many ways You have demonstrated Your faithfulness in my own life. You have answered my prayers, strengthened me in weakness, and delivered me in times of need. These experiences are intentional acts of Your kindness. They serve as reminders that You are true in all that You say.
Lord, I thank You that my hope is secure because it rests in You. It is not dependent on my strength or consistency, but on Your unchanging nature. This frees me from fear and gives me confidence to trust You in all things. Let this assurance produce continual gratitude in my heart.
Receive this thanksgiving as an offering of praise for Your faithfulness and truth. Establish me in this confidence, and cause me to live in a way that reflects trust in Your promises.
