“I say the truth in Christ, I lie not, my conscience also
bearing me witness in the Holy Ghost.”
(Romans 9:1-2)

The testimony of a good conscience is one of the richest gifts given the believer in this life. When rightly informed by the Word and sanctified by the Spirit, conscience becomes a faithful witness to the quality of our attitudes and actions, as well as our underlying motives and intentions. As this passage tells us, the Apostle here appeals not only to his words, but also to the inward testimony of his conscience, bearing witness in the Holy Ghost. This is a gracious gift from God for the stability and comfort of His people.[1]

There is nothing so small, so ordinary, or so routine that it escapes its notice, if we will but listen. Our conscience either accuses or excuses, condemns or affirms. And when rightly understood, its constant presence is not a burden but a gift. It is God’s appointed means to keep us attentive to the condition of our heart, to restrain us from sin, and to encourage us in righteousness. Without such an inward witness, we would drift into carelessness and lose the sense of God’s nearness.

Moreover, our conscience serves as both a guide and a witness, helping us maintain integrity in all that we do. This ongoing attentiveness fosters both sincerity and peace.

And one of its greatest benefits is that, when rightly informed, conscience does not flatter or deceive. It speaks truthfully, even when that truth is uncomfortable. So when it affirms, its testimony carries weight. Thus the Apostle can rely on it, for his confidence is rooted in this inward witness granted by God.

Thankfully, God has not left His people without guidance, nor without comfort. He has given us an inward witness that directs, corrects, and confirms. And when used rightly, our conscience becomes a means of maintaining communion with God and enjoying the sweetness of obedience. It is a gift that, when attended to, affirms spiritual integrity and strengthens our faith.

Contemplations:

  1. Gift of Conscience. Lord, I am thankful that You placed within me a conscience to guide and witness my ways, and that this inner voice speaks according to Your truth. Teach me to value this gift, to attend to it carefully, and to receive its testimony with humility. And help me use it as a means of walking more closely with You.
  2. Guidance in Action. Gracious God, thank you for providing continual direction, guarding me from wandering and calling me to sincerity. Help me remain attentive to this voice of conscience, so that Your truth shapes not only what I do, but how I do it, so that my actions may be pleasing in Your sight.
  3. Stability in Weakness. Lord, thank You for providing an inner means of correction, this faithful witness of conscience. Strengthen me to respond rightly to its voice, that I may be kept from error and restored quickly when I start to drift.
  4. Peace Through Testimony. Heavenly Father, thank You for the peace that comes when conscience bears witness in my favor. This is not a peace built on self-deception, but one grounded in truth and upheld by Your Spirit. Let me seek this testimony earnestly, by walking in sincerity before You. Grant that I may know the comfort of a clear conscience, and that it may strengthen me in every duty.

Prayer (Thanksgiving)

Most gracious and holy God, thank You for the rich mercy You have shown in granting an inward witness within the soul. You have not left Your people without guidance, nor without a means of discerning their ways. In giving a conscience that speaks according to Your truth, You have provided a continual reminder of Your presence and authority. This gift reveals Your care, for You guide not only by outward instruction but by inward conviction.

I am grateful that there is no moment in which I am left without its observation. Whether in great matters or small, it calls me to consider my ways. This is a mercy that preserves me from carelessness and restrains me from sin. Without it, I would easily wander without awareness, but You have appointed this inward witness to keep me attentive.

Thank You that conscience does more than warn; it also affirms. When actions are performed with sincerity and in accordance with Your Word, it bears witness to that truth. This testimony strengthens the soul and brings a measure of peace. It confirms that I am walking in a manner consistent with Your will.

Thank You also for the role of Your Spirit in this work. Conscience does not operate independently, but in submission to Your truth and under the influence of Your Spirit. It is the Holy Ghost who enlightens, convicts, and confirms. Without His work, conscience would be misinformed and unreliable. But through His guidance, it becomes a faithful witness, directing me in the path of righteousness.

Thank You for the peace that flows from a good conscience. This steadies my heart in the face of challenge and strengthens it against accusation. It allows me to rest in the knowledge that I am walking uprightly before You.

Thank You that the warnings of my conscience are not acts of condemnation, but of mercy, calling me away from sin and back to obedience. In this way, it serves as both a guard and a guide. Help me receive its corrections with gratitude, recognizing them as evidence of Your care for my soul.

Don’t let me neglect the voice that You have placed within me, but instead listen carefully and respond faithfully. Keep my conscience informed by Your Word and sensitive to Your Spirit, that it may remain a true and reliable witness.

Receive my thanksgiving for all You have done in providing such a means of guidance and comfort.

In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
