“He stretched out his hand over the sea, he shook the kingdoms: the LORD hath given a commandment against the merchant city, to destroy the strong holds thereof.”
(Isaiah 23:11)
The first coming of Christ upended the world. Kingdoms trembled, religious systems fell, idols lost their dominion, and the old covenant order gave way to the fulfillment found in the Messiah. The prophets described these events through images of shaking heaven and earth, mountains moving, seas being disturbed, and kingdoms being overthrown. Such language reveals the irresistible advance of God’s redemptive purpose.
The appearance of Christ fulfilled these promises visibly. Nature itself bore witness: the star at His birth, the darkness at His death, the earthquake, the torn veil, and the opened graves. Yet beyond these visible signs stood a greater shaking. Christ overthrew the kingdom of darkness, spoiled principalities and powers, and began gathering His church from every nation.[1]
The old Jewish economy likewise faded away because the ceremonial system reached its fulfillment in Christ. The temple veil tore because access to God had been opened. Soon afterward the temple itself fell, and the former order disappeared. The Messiah established a greater covenant written in the hearts of His people.
God’s sovereignty is evidenced in this passage in Isaiah 23. The city of Tyre appeared strong, wealthy, and secure. And yet God overthrew it by His command alone. No armies were necessary because human strength cannot resist divine decree.
Though men trust institutions, governments, wealth, influence, and worldly stability, Scripture repeatedly shows that God raises and removes kingdoms according to His will. Nations rise and fall, institutions weaken, and societies shift. Yet Christ remains enthroned. Knowing that His kingdom cannot be shaken provides us with a secure foundation amid the constant changes we witness in the world.
The sovereign Messiah whose hand stretches over kingdoms and seas alike, overthrows what opposes Him and establishes what serves His glory. The Lord reigns above all and shall accomplish all His purpose according to His appointed times and seasons.
Contemplations:
- My Trust in Earthly Stability. I often look for security in things that appear strong and permanent. Institutions, plans, possessions, and familiar structures feel dependable to me. Yet this passage reminds me that God shakes kingdoms and overturns strongholds by His word alone. I need my confidence to be rooted more deeply in Christ’s kingdom and less in earthly things.
- My Need for Inward Reformation. I can see strongholds still remaining within me—pride, self-reliance, fear, and worldly thinking. I ask You, Lord, to overthrow these as surely as You overthrow kingdoms. I do not want anything in my heart resistant to Your reign.
- My Hope in Christ’s Government. The world often feels unsettled. Rulers come and go, ideas shift, and confusion grows. Yet Christ is sovereign over it all. His kingdom advances even when circumstances appear uncertain. This gives me peace because His purposes cannot fail.
- My Desire for Christ’s Kingdom to Spread. I want Christ’s gospel to continue overturning false worship, unbelief, and darkness. The same Lord who shook the nations through the apostles still works today. Help me pray more earnestly for the growth of Your church, Lord.
Prayer (Supplication):
Most sovereign and mighty Lord, I come before You acknowledging that all kingdoms stand beneath Your authority. You stretch out Your hand over seas and nations. You raise up and bring down according to Your wisdom. No power resists You successfully, and no purpose of Yours can fail.
Lord Jesus, You overthrew the kingdom of darkness, fulfilled the old covenant shadows, and gathered a people from every nation. Continue this work today. Let the gospel spread with power. Destroy spiritual strongholds, worldly pride, unbelief, and false religion. Cause idols to fall before the glory of Christ as You have done throughout history.
Lord, begin this work deeply within me. Reveal every stronghold still living in my heart. Expose pride, self-reliance, worldly affections, and unbelief. Shake whatever opposes Your rule within me and establish greater obedience.
I ask also that You strengthen faithful ministers, preserve sound doctrine, and protect congregations from compromise and fear. Let the gospel continue accomplishing what human power cannot.
I pray for those still living under spiritual darkness. Open blind eyes. Let Christ be known where He is presently ignored and loved where He is presently rejected.
Father, remind me continually that Your purposes move forward even when I cannot see them clearly. And let my life increasingly reflect submission to Your reign. Rule my thoughts, govern my affections, and direct my steps. Let every competing loyalty give way before the authority of Christ.
In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
