“God judgeth the righteous, and God is angry with the wicked every day.”
(Psalm 7:11)

The God of Scripture is presented as “the Righteous Judge” (2 Timothy 4:8) who is never indifferent to His creation, nor does He observe man’s behavior from a distance (Proverbs 15:3). Indeed, all His dealings are governed by righteousness, truth, and perfect knowledge. For as Genesis 18:25 states, “Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?”

In particular, His eye is upon those who fear Him and hope in His mercy, whom He promises to deliver from death and sustain in times of trouble. For the Lord has set apart the godly for Himself; He hears them when they call upon Him (Psalm 34:15-19). He blesses them and surrounds them with favor as with a shield.

And we are reminded that the righteous are not righteous because they deny sin but because they confess it. “Blessed is the one whose transgression is forgiven and whose sin is covered” (Psalm 32:1). Sin is acknowledged, and confession is met with mercy. So the joy that follows belongs to those who are upright in heart because they walk honestly before a righteous Judge.

This same Judge promises that those who do indeed walk uprightly will be welcomed into the presence of the Lord where there is fullness of joy and pleasures forevermore. For salvation and everlasting mercy are not found in strength, numbers, or human advantage, but in calling upon the Lord who is worthy of our praise.[1]

This Judge is also our shepherd, refuge, defender, and deliverer. He does not despise the afflicted nor hide His face from those who cry out to Him. Instead He hears us. He knows us. And thus He judges us rightly.

Moreover, the God who sees and hears and knows is also the God who saves. And the God who is angry with the wicked every day is also the God who forgives, restores, and blesses the righteous who trust in Him.

Contemplations:

  1. Owning your righteous judgment over me. O Lord, I confess that You are right in all Your judgments. I do not stand before You by merit or excuse, but by truth. Let me never think lightly of Your holiness or imagine that Your anger toward sin is small or temporary. Teach my heart to tremble rightly, to submit willingly, and to acknowledge that every verdict You render is just, pure, and good.
  2. Confessing my sin before a Holy God. Father, I come before You knowing that You search the heart and consider every way. I cannot hide my iniquity from You, nor should I try. I acknowledge my sin and my need of mercy. You have no pleasure in wickedness, and I confess that without Your forgiveness I could not stand. Let my confession be honest and complete, trusting only in Your faithful mercy.
  3. Resting in Your care for the upright. Lord, I praise You that You set apart the godly for Yourself and hear them when they call. When my strength fails and my heart is troubled, You remain my refuge. Help me walk uprightly before You out of love and reverence. Let me trust that Your favor surrounds the righteous, even when circumstances are hard and the way is unclear.
  4. Fearing you with hope, not terror. Father, teach me the fear that leads to life. You are angry with the wicked every day, yet Your eye is upon those who fear You and hope in Your mercy. Keep me from careless living and false peace. Let my fear be joined with trust, my awe with obedience, and my hope with humility, that I may stand upright before You all my days.

Prayer (Confession)

Righteous and holy God, I come before You acknowledging that You judge rightly and without partiality. You see all things as they truly are, and nothing is hidden from Your sight. I confess that too often I have thought lightly of sin, both in myself and in the world around me, forgetting that You are angry with the wicked every day.

I confess my own transgressions before You. I have failed to walk uprightly at times. I have not always spoken truth in my heart, nor kept my conscience clear before You and others. I have trusted in my own understanding, sought peace apart from obedience, and allowed fear of men to dull my fear of You. These things are not hidden from You, and I do not excuse them.

Yet I also confess my confidence in Your mercy. You have not despised the afflicted, nor turned away from the one who cries to You. You forgive iniquity when it is confessed, and You restore the soul that comes honestly before You. I thank You that righteousness before You is not achieved by denial of sin but by confession, repentance, and trust in Your grace.

Cleanse my heart, O Lord. Teach me to fear You with reverence and to rejoice in You with humility. Let my trust be placed fully in You, not in strength, success, or outward security. Make me mindful that You weigh the works of men and search the hearts You have fashioned.

Grant that my life would reflect the seriousness of Your judgment and the sweetness of Your mercy. Let me depart from evil and do good, seek peace and pursue it, not to earn Your favor but because I have received it.

I thank You that Your eye is upon those who fear You and hope in Your mercy. Deliver my soul from death, guard me in times of need, and teach me to live openly before You. Let my confession be continual, my obedience sincere, and my joy rooted in Your forgiveness.

In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
