“The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusted in him, and I am helped: therefore my heart greatly rejoices; and with my song will I praise him.”
(Psalm 28:7)
The believer’s greatest battles are not fought on visible fields, nor with earthly weapons. Rather the enemies of the soul are spiritual forces of darkness. Scripture declares this plainly: “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places” (Ephesians 6:12). These adversaries are cunning and relentless. But while their power may cause us to tremble, the Word of God proclaims a greater truth: our God reigns supreme over them all.
By nature, humanity is utterly powerless against these spiritual foes. The fall of Adam and Eve testifies to this truth. Surrounded by divine goodness and clothed in innocence, they still succumbed to the serpent’s deception. If humanity in its sinless state could not withstand temptation apart from divine strength, how much more vulnerable are fallen creatures without the indwelling Spirit of God? Therefore, no Christian should rely on their own wisdom, willpower, or strength in the fight against sin and Satan. Victory is accomplished through the Lord alone.
In mercy, God has equipped His people with a complete set of spiritual armor (Ephesians 6:14-18). Each piece of this armor points to dependence upon Christ—the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, the sword of the Spirit, and prayer as the continual breath of the soul. The battle is not ours, but the Lord’s; our role is to trust, obey, and stand firm in His strength. “The LORD is my strength and my shield,” wrote David, “my heart trusted in him, and I am helped.”
The strength of spiritual enemies lies in their deceit. They whisper lies that question God’s goodness, they sow fear and doubt, and exploit weakness. Yet every lie of hell is broken by the truth of Christ. Jesus overcame the devil’s temptations in the wilderness not with human reasoning but with the sword of the Spirit, the Word of God. “It is written,” He declared, driving back the adversary with divine authority (Matthew 4:4). So must every believer wield Scripture, trusting that God’s Word has the power to subdue every falsehood and extinguish every flaming dart of doubt.
The story of the demoniac in Mark 5 reveals the sheer magnitude of Christ’s power over the kingdom of darkness. When Jesus confronted the legion of unclean spirits tormenting the man, they begged His permission to enter a herd of swine. Even in rebellion, they remained subject to His authority. The Son of God commands, and the hosts of hell obey. What a comfort to those who trust in Him! No scheme of Satan, no multitude of devils, no power of evil can act without divine permission. The same Christ who delivered that tormented soul guards every believer with omnipotent care.
In moments when the battle grows fierce, it is easy to focus on the strength of the enemy rather than the power of the Lord. Yet the psalmist’s confession must be ours: “The LORD is my strength and my shield.” Our help is not drawn from within but from above. “Our help is in the name of the LORD, who made heaven and earth” (Psalm 124:8). The Almighty who created all things sustains, defends, and secures His people.
Finally, we must remember that every battle fought in the strength of the Lord brings joy. David declared, “My heart greatly rejoices; and with my song will I praise him.” Praise is not the song of triumph after the battle is over—it is the weapon that accompanies victory in the midst of the fight. As the believer sings, trusts, and prays, the hosts of darkness are scattered, and God is glorified as the strength of His people.[1]
Contemplations
- Trusting in God’s Strength. When the weight of spiritual warfare presses upon me, I remember that victory is not achieved through my strength but through His. The Lord is my defender. Trusting in His strength gives me courage to face every trial, knowing He has already conquered the enemy.
- Resting in God’s Sovereignty. Psalm 124:8 proclaims, “Our help is in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth.” My confidence lies in this truth. Even when evil seems to prevail, it cannot act apart from God’s sovereign will. This truth allows me to rest in His control and trust that every trial will serve His good purpose.
- Embracing God’s Protection. Psalm 62:6 comforts me: “He only is my rock and my salvation: he is my defense; I shall not be moved.” In Christ, I am shielded from the power of the enemy. His protection is constant and sure which gives me peace to stand firm amid spiritual conflict.
- Finding Peace in God’s Promise. Philippians 4:7 reminds me that “the peace of God, which passes all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” When fear or doubt arises, I rest in this divine peace. It silences my anxiety, strengthens my faith, and keeps my heart anchored in Christ’s victory.
Prayer (Confession)
Almighty and eternal God, my refuge and my fortress, I come before You in humble confession, acknowledging my weakness before the powers of darkness that seek to devour my soul. I confess, O Lord, that too often I have trusted in my own strength rather than in Yours. I have fought spiritual battles with carnal weapons, forgetting that victory comes only through the might of Your Spirit. Forgive me for pride, unbelief, and self-reliance. Forgive me for the times I feared the enemy more than I trusted in Your power.
O Lord of Hosts, teach me to put on the whole armor of God each day, that I may stand against the wiles of the devil. Gird me with truth, cover me with righteousness, strengthen me with faith, and guard my mind with the hope of salvation. Place within my hand the sword of the Spirit and make my heart constant in prayer. Keep my eyes fixed upon the Captain of my salvation, Jesus Christ, who conquered sin, death, and hell.
Gracious Father, I thank You that victory is already secured in Christ. When I am surrounded by temptation, remind me that Your Son triumphed over the adversary by His cross and resurrection. When I feel the weight of accusation, remind me that the blood of Jesus speaks better things than the voice of the accuser. And when I feel weak, remind me that Your strength is made perfect in weakness.
Holy Spirit, strengthen me to resist every snare and deceit of the enemy. Teach me to discern the devil’s lies and answer them with Your truth. Fill my heart with faith that does not falter, courage that does not yield, and peace that cannot be shaken. Keep me mindful that though my enemies are many, my Defender is Almighty.
Lord Jesus, my Good Shepherd and Redeemer, be my shield and my strong tower. Deliver me from the schemes of the evil one. When I stumble, lift me up. When I am weary, sustain me. When fear encircles me, surround me with songs of deliverance. You are my strength and my song, and You have become my salvation.
So grant me grace to rejoice even in battle, to sing praises in the midst of the fight, for You are my help and my defender. Cause me to walk in victory through the power of the risen Christ, confident that no weapon formed against me shall prosper and that greater is He who is in me than he who is in the world.
I ask all these things in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, my Lord, my Strength, and my Shield. Amen.
