“But in the last days it shall come to pass, that the mountain of the house of the LORD shall be established in the top of the mountains, and it shall be exalted above the hills; and people shall flow unto it.”
(Micah 4:1)

What a treasure of hope is found in this prophecy in Micah which confirms the preeminent position, stability, and endurance of “the mountain of the house of the LORD,” that is to say, His Church, who are forever anchored in Him as their Head, nurtured by His presence, and sustained by His Spirit.

Christ’s Church, built by Him as His habitation, is pictured in this prophecy using the imagery of a mountain because of her towering stature and enduring nature. And she is said to be “established in the top of the mountains” and “exalted above the hills” with respect to her lofty position over her heretical counterparts.

Micah also tells us here that “the people shall flow into it” in order to offer prayer, worship, and praise to her LORD, the King of kings. This image brings to mind the desire of Solomon to go to the “mountain of myrrh” and the “hill of frankincense” until the “day breaks and the shadows flee away” (Song of Solomon 4:6).

Myrrh and frankincense were precious spices used in worship and the ceremonial services of the Old Testament (Exodus 30:23-24), and here they symbolize the beauty and fragrance of the prayers and worship offered by the people of God.  So we see how the imagery of the mountain of myrrh and the hill of frankincense in Solomon’s Song speaks of the sweet and fragrant graces found in His Church, a place where Christ’s presence is felt, where prayers ascend to Him like incense, and where His love and grace abound (Isaiah 2:1; Micah 4:1).

We also see Christ’s deep affection for His bride, the Church, expressed here in His promise to remain with her, to abide in her presence, and to accept her prayers until the “day breaks and the shadows flee away”—that is, until the day of our eternal fellowship and communion with Him dawns.

Christ’s promise to abide with His Church here and now gives comfort to believers, for it assures us that His presence is with us until that great and glorious day comes. The shadows of this world, the trials and uncertainties, will all vanish in the light of His return. Until that day, we rest in the knowledge that Christ dwells with His people, hearing our prayers and accepting our sacrifices of praise. The Church rises like Zion’s holy hill, immovable amid shifting sands of culture, unassailable against the gates of hell, and fragrant with the incense of a million prayers ascending as one sweet aroma before the throne. She is the city set on a hill, the lampstand of gold, the bride adorned for her Husband. Every stone is a living soul, every spire a cry of worship, and every window a vista of grace. From every nation, tongue, and tribe, the redeemed are drawn by cords of love, guided by pillars of fire and cloud, converging at the mountain where Christ reigns supreme.

Contemplations:

  1. The Power of Prayer in Christ’s Presence. The mountain of myrrh and hill of frankincense symbolize prayers rising as incense before God—my feeble words transformed into fragrant offerings Christ delights to receive. His presence fills the Church, making every whisper powerful. I will approach His throne boldly, trusting my prayers please Him in His fragrant sanctuary.
  2. Christ’s Faithfulness Until the End. Song of Solomon 4:6 promises Christ abides with His Church until day breaks, so I know that His presence is my constant amid every storm. No trial can separate us for He walks with me to glory. I rest secure in the Bridegroom’s unwavering commitment until eternity dawns.
  3. The Sweetness of His Presence. There is a precious fragrance to Christ’s nearness in worship, and communion with Him is sweet. I want to linger in His church in prayer and praise, savoring the joy of fellowship with Him and my fellow believers.
  4. The Assurance of His Return. Micah 4:1 foretells of the exalted Church awaiting Christ’s return when present trials will pale before His eternal light. I will fix my gaze on the coming Day of the Lord and live as a citizen of the mountain that shall never be moved.

Prayer (Adoration)

Eternal King whose throne is forever established, Your Church is triumphant, immovable, and magnificent. What glory You display in Your bride! She towers above empires that crumble, shines brighter than philosophies that fade, and stands firm while mountains melt like wax. You have made her the joy of the whole earth, the city of the Great King, the habitation of Your holiness. Every stone cries out Your praise, every gate swings wide for the nations, every spire points to heaven’s throne.

I worship You, O Architect of the ages, for building Your Church upon the Rock that hell cannot shake. You are the Foundation, the Cornerstone, the Capstone of glory. From the blood of martyrs to the breath of babes, You have gathered living stones, fitly framed together into a spiritual house. You crowned her with beauty, clothed her with salvation, and adorned her with jewels of grace. She is Your masterpiece, as fair as the moon.

I praise You for the mountain of myrrh and the hill of frankincense (Song of Solomon 4:6) where Your presence lingers like perfume after prayer. You delight to walk amid Your garden, to gather lilies, to inhale the fragrance of Your people’s love. Our prayers are spices in Your nostrils, our worship oil upon Your head, our tears wine in Your cup. You are the Rose of Sharon blooming in the wilderness and the Lily of the Valley gracing every heart that seeks You.

I exalt You, Lord, for Your vow to abide until the day breaks and shadows flee. You will not leave Your love; through the midnight watches, the valley’s shadows, and the furnace’s flames You are there. And You are the same yesterday, today, forever. Your promise is the anchor of our soul, Your presence the light of our path, and Your voice the song in our night.

You are the Desire of all nations and the Glory filling Your temple. The river of Your pleasure flows from Your throne, watering every tree of righteousness, bearing fruit in every season, healing every wound with leaves of grace.

I adore You for the day that hastens when shadows flee and dawn eternal breaks, when You shall descend with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and the trump of God. The mountain shall resound, the hills shall sing, the trees shall clap their hands. Corruption shall put on incorruption, mortality immortality, and sorrow will be transformed into joy. Your bride shall be presented faultless, clothed in fine linen bright and clean, entering the marriage supper of the Lamb.

You are worthy, O Lord of the Church, to receive glory and honor and power. You have purchased her with Your blood, beautified her with Your Spirit, sustained her with Your Word, and destined her for Your throne. Let every prayer be incense, every song a spice, every heart a sacrifice upon the mountain of myrrh and hill of frankincense. Until the day breaks and shadows flee, we worship You—our Head, our Husband, our Hope.

In the name of Jesus Christ, the Chief Shepherd and Bishop of our souls, I adore You. Amen.
