“The Lord at thy right hand shall strike through kings in the day of His wrath.”
(Psalm 110:5)
Christ, the Mediator and King of His church, never stands alone in the execution of His royal office. As He sits at the right hand of the Father in glory, the government of Christ is established by divine power and cannot fail through weakness or opposition, because every act of His kingdom proceeds from the full authority and strength of God.
The kings and rulers of the earth have often opposed the kingdom of Christ. Their power, armies, influence, and alliances may appear formidable, especially when they combine against His truth and His people. Yet no ruler is too strong for Him, no confederacy too extensive, and no throne too secure. Those who oppose His kingdom place themselves against the One whose authority exceeds every earthly position of power.
The Lord exercises patience toward His enemies for a season. But His delayed judgment must not be mistaken for indifference, weakness, or approval. There is a day of wrath appointed in which He will openly break forth against all those who persist in rebellion. His patience gives space for repentance, but it does not cancel His justice. When that appointed day arrives, no rank, title, army, or human defense will be able to preserve those who have hardened themselves against Him.[1]
Moreover, the multitude of Christ’s enemies does not alter the certainty of His victory. However numerous they may be, they are as dead men before Him when He rises to judgment. Their opposition cannot exhaust His strength or delay His purpose, for He will one day bring their resistance to an end and openly display the futility of striving against His kingdom.
This truth gives believers great cause for thanksgiving. The Church is not defended by a weak or uncertain king. Christ possesses divine authority, perfect wisdom, infinite power, and certain victory over every enemy. His people may be opposed, afflicted, or surrounded, but they are never abandoned. The Lord remains at the right hand of His Anointed, and every hostile power will finally be brought beneath the righteous rule of Christ.
Contemplations:
- Thanking You for Standing with Your Anointed. I thank You that Christ does not exercise His kingdom without Your power and authority. No enemy can separate Him from Your purpose, weaken His authority, or frustrate the work You have committed to Him. This gives me confidence when the church experiences opposition, knowing that the security of Christ’s kingdom does not depend on visible circumstances. You uphold Your Son, establish His throne, and cooperate in the execution of His righteous rule. I thank You that the government of Christ can therefore never be overthrown.
- Thanking You for Christ’s Certain Victory. Kings may unite, nations may resist, and authorities may employ every means at their disposal, but none can stand when He rises against them. Because their strength is entirely subject to Your sovereign will, Christ is not threatened by His enemies or troubled by their numbers. I praise You that every hostile throne and every proud conspiracy will finally yield before Him. You have appointed the day, and no opposition can prevent the triumph of Your King.
- Thanking You for Perfect Judgment. Christ judges with wisdom, righteousness, and exact knowledge. He never confuses the penitent with the hardened, the humble with the proud, or the oppressed with the oppressor. He convinces of sin, pardons those who turn to Him, comforts those who are cast down, and seals the unrepentant under righteous condemnation. Even when I cannot understand the course of providence or the apparent delay of justice, I can still rest in the perfection of His government because I know that every sentence of Christ will display the holiness and equity of Your throne.
- Thanking You for the Security of Your People. Thank You that the enemies of Christ cannot finally destroy His people. They may threaten, persecute, injure, and appear to prevail for a time, but their power has an appointed end. This truth allows me to face opposition without despair because I know that His kingdom will endure when every hostile power has fallen.
Prayer (Thanksgiving):
Sovereign Lord, thank You for the glorious, unconquerable reign of Christ. His throne is supported by Your power, His rule expresses Your will, and His victory is certain. Those who resist His kingdom cannot frustrate His purpose or overturn His government because You have appointed a day in which every proud adversary will be brought low.
I praise You for Your patience as well as Your justice. You bear with sinners for a season and give space for repentance, yet You do not forget wickedness or abandon the cause of righteousness. When the day of wrath arrives, every sentence will be holy, wise, and deserved.
Christ judges among the nations with perfect discernment. He pardons the penitent, humbles the proud, and orders all things for the good of His people. No cause is hidden from Him, no injury forgotten, and no faithful servant overlooked.
Your people may be afflicted, opposed, and persecuted, but they are never abandoned. Their King is mighty and their enemies have an appointed end.
Through Jesus Christ, keep my heart thankful, steadfast, and confident beneath His righteous government.
