“In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.”
(Colossians 2:3)

Men often try to comprehend spiritual realities using natural means. But the natural mind, weakened and corrupted by sin, cannot ascend to the knowledge of God by its own intellect. It must receive what God reveals, or it remains in darkness.

God has made Himself known through His Word and His Spirit. According to His will, He opens the eyes of the heart to see what could never be discovered naturally. Faith, therefore, is not a surrender of reason, but its proper ordering under divine authority. It receives what God declares, even when it is beyond our full comprehension.

Resistance to this truth often occurs from misplaced confidence in human reasoning.[1] We assume that our understanding is sufficient to reason through all things, even those that are infinite and divine. But the finite cannot fully grasp the infinite. For this reason, true wisdom begins with humility, recognizing the limits of human understanding and submitting to the revelation of God.

We must recognize that even in natural matters, there are realities that are beyond our comprehension… so how much more the things of God. Further, the inability to explain a truth does not invalidate it. If it did, much of what is known would have to be discarded.

Scripture tells us that in Christ, however, are hidden all treasures of wisdom and knowledge. This means that there is no need to seek understanding apart from Him. All that is necessary for life and godliness is found in His person and revealed through His Word. This provides a firm foundation for our faith, removing the instability that comes from relying on human reasoning alone.

Our response should therefore be to receive this wisdom with gratitude and humility. Rather than trying to master divine truth by our own effort, we can rest in what God has revealed. So let us seek understanding through prayer, dependence on the Spirit, and faithful attention to the Word… while being grateful that God has revealed Himself in Christ through His Spirit and His Word. For it is a gift beyond measure that all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge are found entirely in Him who is the source of all truth.

Contemplations:

  1. Gratitude for Revealed Wisdom. Lord, thank You for revealing Your wisdom in Christ. I could never have discovered these truths by my own understanding, yet You have made them known. This is a gift of grace, and I want to value what You have revealed and to seek no wisdom apart from You.
  2. Thanksgiving for Spiritual Illumination. Gracious God, I give thanks that You have opened my eyes to understand what was once hidden. Your Spirit has taught me, guiding me into truth. Without this work, I would remain in darkness. Continue to illuminate my heart, that I may grow in knowledge and remain steadfast in what You have made known.
  3. Praise for Christ as Wisdom. Lord Jesus, thank You that in You are all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. You are the source and substance of all that I need to know. Let me rest in You, rather than seeking understanding in human reasoning. Strengthen my faith to trust what You have revealed, even when I cannot fully comprehend it.
  4. Gratitude for a Sure Foundation. Heavenly Father, I am grateful that Your truth stands firm, unaffected by the doubts and objections of men. You have given me a foundation that cannot be shaken. Let my heart be established upon this truth, and let gratitude fill my soul for the certainty You have provided.

Prayer (Thanksgiving)

Most wise and gracious God, thank You that all wisdom and knowledge are found in Christ. Thank You for making Him known to Your people. You have not left me to wander in confusion, nor to depend on my own understanding. Instead, You have revealed truth through Your Word and applied it by Your Spirit. This is a mercy beyond measure, for it provides a sure and stable foundation for my soul.

Thank You that Your truth stands firm because it comes from You. Though my understanding is limited, Your revelation is clear and trustworthy. You have given what is necessary for me to know, and in this I find great comfort.

Thank You for the work of Your Spirit in illuminating my mind. Without His guidance, I would remain blind to the things of God. Yet You have opened my eyes to see the beauty and truth of Christ. This work is entirely of Your grace, and I am grateful for it. Continue this work within me, that I may grow in understanding and remain faithful.

Thank You that in Christ I have access to all that I need. He is the source of wisdom, the revelation of truth, and the foundation of my faith. In Him, I find not only knowledge but life. Let me remain rooted in Him, drawing continually from the riches that are found in Him.

I am grateful that Your truth is secure, confirmed by Your authority and preserved by Your power. It cannot be overturned by human reasoning nor diminished by doubt. This gives me confidence to trust You fully, even though Your wisdom is higher than mine for I know Your ways are perfect.

Thank You that this truth reminds me of my dependence on You and guards me from pride. Let me always approach Your Word with reverence and submission, seeking to learn rather than to judge.

Receive my thanksgiving as an offering of praise for the wisdom You have revealed and the understanding You have given. Keep me grounded in Your truth, and let my life reflect the knowledge of Christ.

In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
