“The counsel of the LORD stands forever, the thoughts of his heart to all generations.” (Psalm 33:11)
This verse reminds us that God’s plans are eternal and unshakable. No matter what happens in our world or how uncertain circumstances may seem, His purpose remains steadfast. His thoughts and plans cannot be thwarted; they endure throughout all generations, providing a sense of hope and security for His people.
And one of the blessed assurances for the believer is that our Father’s unwavering plans include the promise of rest that He has prepared for His saints. Scripture tells us that this rest has been both foreordained and purchased for those who belong to Him.
Hebrews 11:16 speaks of this eternal rest as something prepared by God for His people and guaranteed by His faithfulness. So we can believe this promise because it is based entirely on our Heavenly Father’s unchanging nature and sovereign will.
It is also important to recognize that this rest has been purchased for us by the blood of Christ. As the writer of Hebrews tells us, it is by Jesus’ sacrifice that we have access to the “holy of holies” (Hebrews 10:19).[1] Christ’s death and resurrection secured not only our salvation but also our eternal rest with God. This is why the saints in Revelation sing praises to the Lamb, acknowledging that He has redeemed them by His blood and made them a kingdom of priests (Revelation 5:9-10).
Further, this concept of rest encompasses a much deeper reality than just relief from the pain and weariness of this world. It also incorporates the eternal peace and fulfillment of the soul that can only be found in God’s presence. In this life we experience both physical frailties and spiritual burdens, struggles that come with living in a fallen world. Yet God has promised a rest that goes beyond our earthly experiences. We have a foretaste of this rest through our relationship with Him, but its fullness is something we can only know in eternity.
So we can find comfort in the assurance that this carefully designed gift, established by the Creator long before we even existed, awaits us in heaven, and nothing can alter or prevent it. His plans will not fail, and His promises will not be broken, including the promise of rest for His people. So no matter what challenges or trials we face in this life, we know that God’s plan for our ultimate rest in Him is secure because it is rooted in the very nature of His eternal and faithful counsel.
Contemplations:
- God’s Eternal Plans for Me. As I reflect on Psalm 33:11, I am reminded that God’s plans are eternal and unchanging. No matter how uncertain life may feel at times, I know His plans for me were established long before I was even born, and nothing can disrupt His intentions. So when I feel unsure or anxious about the future, I can rest in the knowledge that God’s counsel is unwavering and His promises never fail.
- Purchased Rest in Christ. Thinking about the rest promised me as a believer, I know this is not something I can earn for Jesus purchased this rest through His sacrifice on the cross. His blood opened the way for me to experience true peace with God. So when I face the weariness and struggles of this life, I remember that His sacrifice was more than enough to secure this eternal rest with Him.
- The Assurance of God’s Unshakable Counsel. When I consider how often life changes, I am struck by the unshakable nature of God’s counsel. The world may be full of uncertainty, but God’s plans are sure. His thoughts and purposes are eternal, stretching across all generations. When I am tempted to worry about what’s ahead, I can trust that God’s will is perfect and His plans for me are secure. I don’t need to understand every detail; I only need to trust that His counsel will always stand.
- The Gift of Eternal Rest. As I meditate on the rest promised to the saints, I realize that this rest reflects God’s deep love for His people. He prepared this rest for me long before I even knew Him, and it is part of His eternal purpose—a real place of peace and fulfillment that awaits me. Even now, I can experience glimpses of that rest as I walk closely with Him.
Prayer (Adoration)
O Lord God Almighty, whose counsel stands forever and whose thoughts stretch across all generations, I lift my heart in worship before Your throne. You are the eternal One, unchanging and sovereign, ruling with perfect wisdom and infinite love. Your purposes cannot be hindered, Your plans cannot be overturned, and Your promises never fail. You have spoken, and it shall stand. You have decreed, and none can reverse it. I adore You for Your sovereign might, Your eternal purpose, and Your gracious covenant that secures Your people forever.
You have ordained a rest for Your saints, a rest purchased by the precious blood of Jesus Christ, and I worship You for the glory of such mercy. Before the world began, You prepared this rest; before I drew my first breath, You appointed a place of peace and glory for my soul. You have provided redemption, not with corruptible things, but with the spotless sacrifice of the Lamb who stands in the midst of the throne. Christ has opened the way, He has torn the veil, He has secured the inheritance, and in Him I find peace that the world can neither give nor take away.
Grant me grace to adore You not only with my lips but with my life. Let my heart rest in Your decrees, let my mind bow before Your wisdom, and let my soul delight in Your promises. Remove all anxious striving, all restless doubt, and teach me to trust the God who cannot lie and whose counsel is everlasting.
Let my every breath be filled with reverence, my every duty be performed in joy, and every trial I experience be borne with patience, for You have appointed my steps and secured my end. I praise You, O God of truth and grace, for the eternal rest reserved for Your people, and I bless Your name for the peace that begins even now by Your Spirit’s work within me.
Let the hope of that everlasting Sabbath quiet my fears, calm my sorrows, and lift my eyes to heaven where Christ reigns and intercedes. And let my soul cling to the promises of Your Word and Your Lamb who has redeemed me. For You are my refuge, my joy, my rest, and my eternal home.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost, world without end. Amen.
