“And the LORD passed by before him, and proclaimed, The LORD, The LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth, keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children’s children, unto the third and to the fourth generation.”
(Exodus 34:6-7)[1]
God’s forgiveness is a gift of boundless mercy which comforts the repentant soul. Exodus 34:6-7 reveals that God is “merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth,” delighting in forgiving iniquity, transgression, and sin. Matthew Henry observes, “God’s mercy in forgiveness is the spring of our salvation, flowing from His compassionate nature.”
God’s forgiveness is transformative as 1 John 1:9 promises, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” This act of confession opens the door to God’s cleansing grace that is sufficient to wash away my guilt and renew my heart.
The scope of God’s forgiveness is vast, as Isaiah 38:17 declares: “Thou hast in love to my soul delivered it from the pit of corruption: for thou hast cast all my sins behind thy back.” The blood of Christ covers all our iniquity, providing us with complete redemption.
His forgiveness heals, as Psalm 103:3 proclaims: “Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases.” It also frees me from sin’s bondage and its consequences. Luke 1:77 and Matthew 9:2 speak of the joy of forgiven sins, bidding me to “be of good cheer” because my guilt is removed.
And the permanence of God’s forgiveness, as Jeremiah 31:34 and Micah 7:19 affirm, is a profound comfort: “I will remember their sin no more,” for He casts my sins into the depths of the sea. This promise eliminates the burden of past guilt, sustaining me through times of doubt and temptation.
God’s forgiveness deepens my gratitude and strengthens my faith, assuring me that God’s mercy endures forever. It also urges me to confess swiftly, trust deeply, and live joyfully, knowing my sins are forgiven through Christ. His advocacy, His blood, His righteousness secure my peace and offer eternal comfort to my soul.
Contemplations:
- Grasping the gift. 1 John 2:1 depicts Christ as my Advocate, offering forgiveness through His righteousness. This hope allows me to embrace His mercy and rest in His advocacy, praising Him for His gift of forgiveness.
- Personal journey to peace. 1 John 1:9 calls me to confess my sins, trusting God’s faithful forgiveness which brings cleansing. I must remember to approach God humbly, openly confessing my faults and relying on His mercy to renew my heart.
- All-encompassing grace. Isaiah 38:17 assures me that God casts all my sins behind His back. No sin is beyond His grace. But do I really trust His forgiveness of all my sin? Help me live fully in the freedom of Your all-encompassing mercy, Father.
- The finality of forgiveness. Jeremiah 31:34 promises that God remembers my sins no more, but I find myself often still carrying past guilt instead of trusting His permanent forgiveness and living for His glory.
Prayer (Thanksgiving):
O Lord, You are the God of boundless mercy, whose heart is revealed in Exodus 34:6-7 as gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness. I thank You for the eternal comfort of Your forgiveness, a gift that lifts me from the pit of my sin. Your mercy, poured out through Christ’s sacrifice, cleanses me from all unrighteousness, as 1 John 1:9 promises. I praise You for Your Son, my Advocate, whose blood secures my peace and restores my soul.
I am grateful for the vast scope of Your forgiveness, casting all my sins behind Your back (Isa. 38:17). No iniquity is too great for Your grace, no transgression beyond Your reach. Thank You for making my crimson sins white as snow (Isa. 1:18), for transforming my heart and healing my wounds (Ps. 103:3). Your forgiveness is eternal, as Jeremiah 31:34 declares, remembering my sins no more and freeing me from guilt’s shadow.
Thank You for the personal reality of Your mercy. Through confession, You cleanse me, granting peace that surpasses understanding (Phil. 4:6-7). I praise You for Your justice, which does not clear the unrepentant, as well as Your love, which forgives fully those who come to you through Christ. I thank You for the ministers and Scriptures that guide me to Your throne, teaching me to trust Your mercy and live in Your light.
Your forgiveness sustains me through trials, anchoring my faith in Your unchanging love. I am grateful for the joy of being called out of darkness into Your marvelous light (1 Pet. 2:9), and made whole by Your grace. Let my life be a song of thanksgiving, proclaiming the comfort of Your forgiveness to all. You are my Redeemer, my Father, my joy, and I worship You for Your eternal mercy.
In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
