“Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.”
(Matthew 5:48)

The command of Christ to be perfect as the Father is perfect urges the believer to grow beyond a simple profession of faith toward a conformity to the character of God in spirit and conduct. When Christ speaks these words in Matthew, He is not commanding an impossible standard meant to discourage the saints but a holy pattern that draws them upward toward the likeness of their Father in heaven.

When the heart has been renewed by grace, it delights in those passages that call for holiness. A renewed soul is most stirred by the parts of Scripture that draw the believer toward greater purity, obedience, and likeness to God.[1]

The apostle Peter declares, “But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.” (1 Pet. 1:15-16).

Of course, the believer cannot possess the infinite holiness of God, but we are called to reflect it in our character and behavior. Just as children often bear the features and mannerisms of their parents, so the children of God are called to display something of their Heavenly Father’s character before the world.

The pattern for this holy life is found most clearly in Jesus Christ. The apostle John expresses this plainly: “He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked” (1 John 2:6). The life of Christ provides the clearest picture of holiness ever displayed on earth. In Christ, humility, patience, righteousness, compassion, and obedience are perfectly demonstrated.

Thus the command of Christ reminds us that our lives should not be governed by the standards of the world but by the character of God Himself; each step toward holiness becomes a testimony of divine grace working within our soul.

God has not left His people without a pattern or direction. Both in His Word and in the example of Christ, He provides the perfect model of righteousness. By following that pattern, we can steadily grow in holiness and reflect the glory of the One who called us.

Contemplations:

  1. Gratitude for the holy pattern God has given me. Heavenly Father, thank You for revealing the standard of holiness in Your Word. You did not leave me to wander without direction but have shown me the character that pleases You. Your commands guide my steps and teach me how to live in a way that honors Your name.
  2. Thanksgiving for the example of Jesus Christ. Lord, I praise You for giving me the perfect example of holiness in the life of Christ. In His humility, patience, love, and obedience I see the beauty of righteousness displayed. Through Him I learn how to walk faithfully in this world.
  3. Gratitude for the grace that enables holiness. God, thank You that the call to holiness is accompanied by the gift of Your grace. You do not merely command righteousness but work within Your people to produce it. Every desire to obey, every step toward purity, and every victory over sin comes from Your gracious hand.
  4. Praise for the privilege of reflecting my Heavenly Father. Thank You, Lord, that You adopted me as Your child and called me to resemble Your character. It is a great honor to bear the likeness of my heavenly Father. May my life increasingly reflect Your righteousness, mercy, and truth.

Prayer (Thanksgiving)

Holy and righteous Father, I come before You with a thankful heart for the calling You have placed upon Your people. Your Word commands that we be perfect as You are perfect, and I am grateful that this command reveals both Your holiness and Your gracious purpose for those who belong to You.

I praise You for revealing Your pattern for holiness through Your Word. Without Your instruction, my life would tend to reflect the standards of this world. Yet Your commandments show the path of righteousness and guide me toward a life that honors You.

Thank You for the perfect example given in Jesus Christ. In His life I see the beauty of obedience and the purity of true righteousness. Thank You that He not only teaches holiness but also secures the grace that enables it through His redeeming work.

Every movement toward holiness is evidence of Your grace at work. You shape the heart, renew the mind, and strengthen the will so that Your people may walk in the path of righteousness.

Thank You for the privilege of being called Your child. To bear the name of Your family is a gift beyond measure. I praise You that You are not ashamed to claim Your people as Your own and that You patiently shape them into the likeness of Christ.

Continue this work of transformation within my heart. Let gratitude for Your grace deepen my desire to pursue holiness. May every step of obedience reflect my thankfulness for the mercy You have shown me in Christ.

Let my life shine as a testimony to Your grace in the midst of a dark world. May others see the beauty of holiness and glorify You, the Father who calls His people to walk in righteousness.

And thank You for the privilege of striving toward the likeness of my heavenly Father and for the assurance that the work You begin in Your people will one day be brought to completion.

In Jesus’ name I pray.
