“And he shewed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the LORD, and Satan standing at his right hand to resist him. And the LORD said unto Satan, The LORD rebuke thee, O Satan; even the LORD that hath chosen Jerusalem rebuke thee: is not this a brand plucked out of the fire?”
(Zechariah 3:1-2)

Temptation is one of the most painful and confusing realities of the Christian life. Satan does not only oppose us through persecution and trouble, he also works to weaken our faith, disturb our peace, corrupt our affections, and hinder our communion with God.

He may cause us to be distracted in times of prayer and worship and become discouraged and wearied in our service. Yet Scripture teaches that temptations are integral to our spiritual life, and that the believer’s ability to stand against temptation ultimately rests not in our strength, but in God’s mercy and sovereign grace.[1]

Christ Himself was tempted by Satan directly and endured the full weight of assault without sin. This is a comforting truth because the Captain of our salvation walked the same path and knows firsthand the anguish of temptation from personal experience. Therefore, when we are tempted we have a compassionate High Priest who understands whatever we are facing.

And because our Lord was victorious in His time of testing, He broke the power of sin and Satan over those united to Himself. So though the believer may be assaulted, he cannot be conquered while being upheld by divine grace.

Christ also shows us by example how to stand against temptation if we are to prevail. As He resisted Satan through the truth of God’s Word, we can expect to do likewise. Alongside a steadfast obedience and unwavering dependence upon the Father, we are promised the power to resist through the power of Scripture.

But we must seek His strength continually. Temptation often awakens fear, confusion, and discouragement, but we are called to remember that Christ has already overcome the world. Victory belongs ultimately to Him, and all His people share in that victory because we are united with Him.

Contemplations:

  1. My Weariness Under Temptation. Temptation sometimes feels relentless. My thoughts are distracted, my prayers seem weak, and my confidence is unsettled. And I tend to grow discouraged when spiritual conflict continues for long seasons without immediate relief. Yet this passage reminds me that temptation itself is not proof that God has abandoned me. Christ Himself endured severe temptation, and many of God’s people have walked through similar conflicts. I need to remember that spiritual warfare accompanies genuine spiritual life rather than disproving it.
  2. My Comfort in Christ’s Compassion. I am deeply comforted knowing that Christ understands temptation because He Himself experienced it. He knows the pressure, weariness, and grief that temptation brings to the soul. So when I struggle, I do well to remember that I come before One who has walked this path Himself and who remains tender toward tempted believers. This gives me encouragement to seek His help more readily during spiritual conflict.
  3. My Need for Continual Dependence. Temptation exposes how weak I truly am apart from grace. I can easily imagine myself spiritually strong until conflict reveals how quickly fear, pride, unbelief, or discouragement rise within me. This passage reminds me that I cannot stand securely through personal determination alone. I need Christ continually supplying grace, strength, and wisdom if I am to endure faithfully in spiritual battle.
  4. My Hope in Christ’s Final Victory. When temptations feel heavy and prolonged, I can lose sight of the certainty of Christ’s triumph. Yet Scripture reminds me that Satan is already a defeated enemy through the victory of Christ. The conflict remains painful, but it is not uncertain. A day is coming when all temptation, accusation, and warfare will cease entirely. Remembering this strengthens my heart and helps me continue fighting with hope rather than despair.

Prayer (Supplication):

Most merciful and faithful Lord, I recognize my weakness amid the many temptations and spiritual conflicts that surround me. Satan seeks continually to distract, discourage, accuse, and weaken my soul. I often feel the pressure of inward struggles, wandering thoughts, fearful anxieties, and discouraging assaults upon my faith. So I ask that You sustain me by Your grace and keep me from falling beneath these burdens.

Lord Jesus, I am grateful that You Yourself were tempted and therefore know fully the sorrows and difficulties of spiritual conflict. You understand the weariness temptation brings because You endured it personally during Your earthly ministry. Let this truth comfort my heart when I feel isolated or overwhelmed. Teach me to run quickly to You for help when I am tempted rather than relying on my own strength.

I ask that You rebuke Satan and restrain his assaults according to Your wisdom. He seeks to accuse me before You, magnify my failures, weaken my faith, and disturb my communion with You. Yet You are my Advocate and Defender. Speak peace to my troubled conscience through the promises of the gospel and remind me continually that my standing rests in Your righteousness rather than my own performance.

Lord, strengthen my faith during seasons of temptation. When discouragement rises, keep me from despair. When sinful desires awaken, grant me strength to resist them. When distractions pull my thoughts away from You, restore watchfulness to my heart.

Teach me to rightly use the weapons You have appointed for spiritual battle. Keep me diligent in prayer, faithful in meditating on Your Word, and watchful over my heart. Do not allow me to grow careless or spiritually lazy, for I know how quickly temptation gains strength when spiritual awareness weakens.

Lord, I ask especially for greater dependence on Your grace. Temptation exposes how unable I am to preserve myself. I cannot stand securely through my own wisdom or determination. Keep me mindful that every victory over sin and every moment of perseverance comes entirely through Your sustaining power.

Thank You also for the comfort of Your continual intercession. As You prayed for Peter that his faith would not fail, so You continue to intercede for Your people now. Let this truth strengthen me when I feel weak and afraid. Remind me that I never fight alone, for You remain at the right hand of Your people as their faithful Savior.

In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
