“But as it is written, eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.”
(1 Corinthians 2:9)

The Apostle Paul paints a word picture in 1 Corinthians 2:9 to describe the incomprehensible blessings that God has prepared for those who are His, reminding us that the reality of God’s covenant with His people goes far beyond what we can ever begin to perceive or imagine.

We live in a world filled with things we can touch, see, and experience. But the fullness of what God has in store for His people is hidden from our present reality and, according to Paul, there is nothing on earth that can even come close to comparing with what God has waiting for us. These promises include the rich inheritance of the kingdom of heaven itself (Matthew 5:3), where believers will dwell in eternal glory with their Savior. This is a gift of immeasurable value.

And God doesn’t just promise us a place in His kingdom. He also gives us a new heart, one that is suited to the spiritual life He calls us to.[1] Ezekiel 36:26 says, “A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you.” While our old hearts were bound by sin and weakness, the new heart God gives is fitted for the work of righteousness, for walking with God, and for receiving the fullness of His blessings.

This new heart enables us to love our Lord, to fear Him rightly, and to obey Him. It is a heart that is inclined toward His commandments and finds joy in doing His will. Where the old heart resisted the ways of God, the new heart delights in them. Psalm 40:8 expresses this beautifully: “I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law is within my heart.”

Ultimately, God equips His children with the power to live out the life He has called us to. We are not left to struggle in our own strength, but are given the Holy Spirit, who enables us to persevere. As 2 Timothy 1:7 declares, “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” This empowerment ensures that we can walk faithfully with God, not just in small moments of victory, but throughout the whole of our lives.

So, when we consider what God has prepared for those who love Him, we must understand that these blessings are beyond our current comprehension. Yet, through the Spirit, we are given a taste of these promises even now, as we live in obedience to His will and look forward to the glorious inheritance that awaits us in His kingdom. And by doing so, our hearts are continually renewed, our spirits are strengthened, and our hope is set on things above.

Contemplations:

  1. The Unseen Kingdom. When I consider 1 Corinthians 2:9, I am humbled by the reality that my eyes cannot now see the full extent of God’s promises. I am reminded that no matter how much beauty or goodness I witness in this world, it pales in comparison to the glory that God has prepared. I often think I understand what is best for me, but God’s plans are far greater than anything I can imagine. This truth encourages me to trust Him more deeply, knowing that His gifts are infinitely beyond my comprehension.
  2. A New Heart, A New Desire. Ezekiel 36:26 speaks of the new heart God has given me, a heart that is no longer resistant to His will but desires to walk in obedience. In moments when I feel old temptations pulling at me, I remember that God has already transformed my heart. My struggle is not against flesh and blood alone, but against the remnants of my old self. Yet, with the Spirit’s help, I can walk in newness of life, delighting in His commands and finding joy in His ways.
  3. Empowered by the Spirit. 2 Timothy 1:7 reminds me that God has not left me to live this Christian life in my own strength. He has given me His Spirit, so that through His power I can overcome my fears and weaknesses. I may face challenges that seem overwhelming, but I remember that the Spirit of God within me is greater than anything in this world. His strength is my strength, which enables me to endure and press on toward the calling He has placed on my life.
  4. The Law Written on My Heart. When I consider what it means to have God’s law written on my heart, I realize that it goes beyond mere duty or obligation. It is a change in my very nature, where obedience to God’s will becomes my deepest desire. Psalm 40:8 comes to mind—His law is not a burden to me, but a source of joy. I am not perfect, but God is continually at work, shaping my heart to reflect His righteousness, guiding me into greater conformity with His will.
