“I indeed baptize You with water unto repentance:
but he that cometh after me is mightier than I,
whose shoes I am not worthy to bear:
he shall baptize You with the Holy Ghost, and with fire.”
(Matthew 3:11)
The ministry of John the Baptist was powerful enough to stir conviction and point those who heard his message toward repentance. But when the people began to wonder whether he might be the Christ, he immediately directed them beyond himself to the One who was mightier. John’s faithfulness is seen not only in what he preached but also in his determination to make Christ greater in the estimation of his hearers.[1]
Likewise, the true servant of God does not direct glory to himself that belongs to Christ. He does not make his personality, influence, office, knowledge, or usefulness the center of attention but rather points men toward the Savior. The governing principle is that Christ must increase while the servant decreases. And the mark of a godly ministry is when those who hear it come away thinking more highly of Christ than they do the preacher.
The greatness of Christ is especially displayed in the contrast between outward administration and inward power. John could baptize with water, but Christ baptizes with the Holy Ghost. A minister may preach truth faithfully, administer ordinances, instruct the mind, and call sinners to repentance. But he cannot change the heart. No human office carries the power of regeneration, for that work belongs uniquely to Christ through the Holy Spirit.
Indeed, Christ, as Head of the church, does what no minister, parent, teacher, or ordinance can accomplish. He opens the heart, renews the inward nature, grants spiritual life, and joins sinners savingly to himself. Men may bring truth to the ear, but Christ brings it into the soul by the regenerating power of His Spirit.
Christ is mightier than the greatest of His servants, sovereign over the inward work of grace, infallible in judgment, and faithful in rewarding those who belong to Him. Ministers may awaken the conscience, preach truth, administer ordinances, and point sinners toward salvation, but Christ alone gives the Spirit and brings the work to its saving completion.
Contemplations:
- Before the Mightier One. You Yourself testified that John the Baptist was the greatest to ever live (Matt. 11:11), yet he counted himself unworthy even to tie Your shoes. No preacher, teacher, minister, or saint can share the glory that belongs uniquely to You. Their words may awaken thought, but You alone command the heart. Keep my admiration rightly ordered, so that every faithful servant leaves me looking more fully on You.
- Where Human Power Ends. You alone can do what no ministry can accomplish because You alone can renew the inward man. I worship You because regeneration belongs to Your power. You alone can transform sinners. Every genuine work of grace in the soul bears witness to Your divine authority.
- The Giver of the Holy Ghost. You give spiritual life, awaken faith, produce repentance, illuminate the understanding, and form holiness within Your people through the gift of Your Spirit. Every converted heart, every awakened conscience, every holy affection, and every true confession of faith declares Your power, for You are the living Savior who makes preaching effectual according to Your will.
- The Judge Who Knows the Wheat. The visible church contains wheat and chaff together, but no false profession can deceive You and no weak grace can escape Your notice. In Your time, You will separate with perfect righteousness, gathering Your own into safety and assigning every soul its proper place. Your knowledge is exact, Your sentence just, and Your care for those who truly belong to You complete.
Prayer (Adoration):
Lord Jesus, You are mightier than every servant who has ever spoken in Your name. The greatest minister remains beneath You, the wisest teacher depends on You, and the most faithful preacher can only point others toward the glory that belongs to You alone.
Men may preach, teach, warn, persuade, and administer outward ordinances, but You alone change the heart. You alone give spiritual life. John baptized the body with water, but You baptize the soul with Your Spirit.
Your power reaches where human words cannot reach. You open what is closed, awaken what is dead, cleanse what is inwardly defiled, and form faith where unbelief once ruled. Every work of regeneration displays Your divine authority and grace.
You are also the infallible Judge of Your church. You know Your own perfectly. You see through every false profession and recognize even the weakest true grace. Your judgment makes no mistakes. You remember every faithful witness, every tear shed for Your name, and every suffering endured in obedience.
Let every true work of grace increase my admiration of Your power and everything in the church magnify Your name.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
