“God is jealous, and the LORD revengeth; the LORD revengeth, and is furious; the LORD will take vengeance on His adversaries, and he reserveth wrath for His enemies.”
(Nahum 1:2)
The justice of God is inseparable from His holiness. His wrath is not a defect in His character, nor an uncontrolled passion, but the righteous opposition of the holy God against sin. And because He is perfectly just, He cannot treat evil as though it were harmless. His jealousy protects the honor of His name, and His vengeance is the execution of righteous judgment upon those who persist as His adversaries.
We cannot imagine nor adequately comprehend the weight, extent, or severity of God’s wrath. Scripture therefore uses images of consuming fire, trembling mountains, shaking earth, and overwhelming judgment to impress on the mind something of its dreadful reality. Yet even these images do not exhaust what it means for the sinner to fall under the indignation of the Almighty.
Moreover, the justice of God is unavoidable. No wisdom can outmaneuver Him, no strength can resist Him, and no place can hide the sinner from His presence. Darkness is as light before Him. Distance offers no refuge. The One who is infinite in wisdom, mighty in strength, and present everywhere cannot be escaped by policy, power, secrecy, or flight.
And yet the same justice that terrifies the impenitent becomes a source of comfort to believers. Those who are in Christ know that divine justice has already been satisfied in their Surety, and God does not demand a second satisfaction for the same guilt. The question, “Who is he that condemns?” receives its answer in Christ who died. Thus the justice of God, once feared as condemning, becomes part of the believer’s security because Christ has fully answered its claims.[1]
This justice also supports believers when they suffer wrongs or accusations. There is a righteous Judge in heaven who sees the cause clearly and cannot be deceived. Human courts may fail, reputations may be injured, and injustice may prosper for a time, but none of this alters the final equity of God. He knows every wrong and will vindicate what is righteous according to His perfect wisdom.
Scripture presents justice and judgment as the habitation of His throne. His righteousness is compared to great mountains and His judgments to the great deep. There is transcendent beauty in a God whose every sentence is true, whose every judgment is right, and whose government is never corrupted by partiality, ignorance, or weakness.
No righteousness of one’s own can answer the demands of the righteous God. Safety can only be found in the Mediator, whose righteousness covers every sin and whose satisfaction secures all who are united to Him. In Christ, the justice that once barred the way becomes the justice that confirms the believer’s acceptance and guards the entrance into everlasting blessedness.
Contemplations:
- Before Your Burning Holiness. You are not indifferent to evil. Your jealousy is holy, Your anger righteous, and Your judgments pure. There is no compromise in Your nature and no corruption in Your throne. You never call darkness light or evil good. You are worthy of worship precisely because You are perfectly righteous.
- Beneath the Eye That Sees All. There is nowhere I could go beyond Your sight. Darkness does not conceal, distance does not remove, and power does not shield. You know every person, every motive, every act, and every hidden purpose. I adore You because Your omniscience makes Your judgments infallible and justice certain.
- Safe Behind a Satisfied Justice. Your justice would condemn me apart from Christ, yet in Him it has become part of my security. You required satisfaction, and Your Son has rendered it. I adore You because You do not demand payment twice. The same justice that condemns unatoned guilt confirms the safety of the one whose guilt has been answered by Christ. What once stood against me now bears witness that there is no condemnation for those represented by Him. Your justice and Your mercy meet perfectly in the cross.
- The Beauty of Your Righteous Throne. Your throne is established in justice and judgment. Every verdict is right, every sentence proportioned, every act of rule perfectly wise. Even when I cannot trace Your judgments, I know they arise from a righteous nature. Let me rejoice that the universe is governed not by chance or corruption, but by the righteous Lord whose judgments are true.
Prayer (Adoration):
Jealous and righteous God, I adore You for the holiness of Your justice. You are not indifferent to evil, and You never compromise with sin. Every judgment that proceeds from You is true, wise, and righteous.
Your wrath is terrible because Your holiness is perfect. No sinner can escape Your sight, outwit Your wisdom, overpower Your strength, or hide from Your presence. You are the Judge of all the earth, and You always do right.
Yet I worship You also because Your justice has been fully satisfied in Jesus Christ for all who belong to Him. You did not spare Your own Son when He stood in the place of sinners, and His satisfaction was complete. Therefore Your justice does not threaten a second payment where Christ has already answered the debt.
You are also the righteous defender of Your people. When they are slandered, wronged, or oppressed, You remain the just Judge in heaven. No injustice escapes Your notice, and no righteous cause is lost before You.
Your throne is beautiful because justice and judgment are its habitation. Your righteousness is without defect, Your judgments without error, and Your ways without corruption.
You are worthy to be praised for Your judgments are true and altogether right.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
