“And therefore will the LORD wait, that he may be gracious unto You, and therefore will he be exalted, that he may have mercy upon You: for the LORD is a God of judgment: blessed are all they that wait for Him.”
(Isaiah 30:18)
When God chooses to delay His mercy it does not mean that He has forgotten His people. He waits that He may be gracious, and His waiting is governed by His wisdom. He is a God of judgment, ordering every act according to perfect discernment. Mercy therefore comes neither too soon nor too late, but at the time most suitable for His glory and the good of those who receive it.
Believers often want God to respond in the present moment to their request for His help while allowing themselves to delay obedience. Yet God is sovereign, and His gifts are free; He is under no obligation to His creatures. In fact, our delayed obedience should only make us more patient when His patience requires us to wait for promised blessing.[1]
A short delay may feel intolerable when our faith is weak, which is one reason God uses waiting to exercise grace. Faith rests on promises before their fulfillment. Love holds steady while mercy is delayed. Patience endures without expectations from God. If every request for blessing was answered immediately, these graces would have no opportunity to be exercised and displayed.
As Hebrews 11:1 tells us, faith gives substance to things hoped for and rests in what God has promised before the answer is visible. Faith is able to wait because the promise rests in the character of God.
The strength of our faith lies in the declaration that the Lord is a God of judgment. His timing is never careless. He knows when mercy should be given and when His people are best prepared to receive it. What appears to be waiting for God may also be a season in which God is preparing His people. He remains a present help in trouble even when the particular relief desired has not yet appeared.
Those who wait for Him are not abandoned to uncertainty. They wait upon One who is gracious, wise, just, present, and perfectly attentive to their need. Remember, God may be praised not only for what He gives, but for the wisdom that determines when He gives it.
Contemplations:
- Thank You for Your Wise Timing. You know the proper time to give and the proper time for me to receive. What I call late may be exactly right in Your wisdom. You are never careless with my needs, and You are never hurried by my impatience. I praise You because Your timing is part of Your goodness. You see what I cannot see, and You know what must be formed in me before the blessing comes. Teach me to regard Your delays not as neglect, but as the work of a wise and gracious God.
- Thank You for Your Patience with Me. I am quick to ask for relief and slow to answer Your calls to obedience. Yet You continue to call, correct, and prepare me. Your patience exposes my impatience, but it also magnifies Your mercy.
- Thank You for the Grace Exercised in Waiting. Thank You that waiting is not wasted time. You use it to exercise faith, love, and patience. When I cannot see the answer, You teach me to rest on Your promise. When relief is postponed, You show me how much I love ease and how little I am willing to submit to Your timing. But these are not empty delays for You are strengthening graces that would remain weak if every desire were answered immediately. I praise You for working in me even while the blessing is still withheld.
- Thank You That You Are a God of Judgment. Thank You that nothing in Your providence is mistimed. You judge perfectly when to give, when to withhold, when to comfort, and when to continue the trial. Your wisdom is exact, and Your mercy is never separated from that wisdom. I may not understand why one season continues longer than another, but I can trust the One who governs both. You remain my present help even before the particular answer appears. I praise You that waiting for You is never waiting on uncertainty, but on perfect judgment joined with perfect grace.
Prayer (Thanksgiving):
Gracious and wise God, thank You that Your mercy is never careless or given at the wrong time. You know exactly when to act, when to withhold, and when the blessing will best serve Your glory and my good.
Thank You for Your patience with me. I often demand answers from You while delaying obedience myself. Yet You continue to bear with me, correct me, and call me.
I praise You for the grace You exercise through waiting. You strengthen my faith by teaching me to rest on promises not yet fulfilled. You strengthen my love by teaching me to value You above immediate ease. You strengthen my patience by delaying Your mercy according to Your perfect wisdom.
Thank You that You are a God of judgment. Your decisions are never mistaken. Mercy does not come one moment too early or one moment too late. You understand the need, the season, the trial, and the heart that must receive the blessing.
Thank You that You remain a present help even while I wait. Your presence is still with me even when a particular answer is delayed. You are near, attentive, and sufficient.
So keep me grateful while I wait, steady in faith, ready in obedience, and confident that Your gracious timing is always right.
