“When they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, ‘Then hath God also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life.'”
(Acts 11:18)
Acts 11:18 marks a major turning point in the life of the early church—the realization that Christ died and rose again to bring salvation to all nations … not just Israel alone. Indeed, His resurrection and ascension signaled the beginning of His reign as the universal King.
Before His ascension, Christ’s mission was focused on the lost sheep of Israel. His instructions to His disciples reflected this, as He commanded them not to go to the Gentiles or the Samaritans (Matthew 10:5-6). However, after His resurrection, He declared that “all power is given unto me in heaven and in earth” (Matthew 28:18), commissioning His disciples to go forth and make disciples of all nations. This marked a monumental shift in their mission, for Christ was now King not only of the Jews but of the Gentiles as well.
Christ’s kingship was fully inaugurated after His priestly work of offering Himself as a sacrifice for sin was complete. Philippians 2:9-11 explains that because Christ humbled Himself even unto death, God exalted Him, giving Him a name above all names. His ascension into heaven was His triumphant return, where He received authority over all nations. The power and authority He now exercises in His regal office are the reward for His obedience, sacrifice, and intercession on our behalf.[1]
And it is through His rule that we, His followers, receive blessings. He is both our royal priest and sovereign King, interceding for us even as He rules over the world. His kingdom is unlike any earthly monarchy for it is sustained by His sacrifice and priestly intercession. As Hebrews 10:12 tells us, “But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down on the right hand of God.” His seated position at the right hand of the Father signifies His completed work and ongoing reign.
His kingdom is unshakable, and His purposes will prevail. And as His subjects, we are called to participate in the expansion of His kingdom by proclaiming His gospel to all people, knowing that He is both our King and our Advocate.
Let us then honor Christ as our sovereign King, recognizing that He rules with justice, mercy, and power. His reign is eternal, and His kingdom will have no end. We can trust in His sovereign rule, knowing that He holds all things in His hands, and that He will one day bring all things under His authority, reconciling the world to Himself.
Contemplations:
- Christ, the Universal King. Acts 11:18 affirms that Christ is not just the King of Israel but of the whole world. This reality brings great comfort, knowing that His reign is global and that His invitation to repentance and everlasting life includes everyone.
- The Blessings of His Reign. When I consider Ephesians 4:8, I am reminded that Christ, as King, has given gifts to His people, including the power to live for Him and spread His kingdom message. Every blessing I receive, whether material or spiritual, flows from His throne of grace, for Christ delights in showering His subjects with blessings that equip them for His service.
- Christ’s Intercession Secures His Rule. Hebrews 10:12 reminds me that Christ’s reign is secured by His priestly intercession. His work on the cross was not the end of His ministry; it continues even today as He intercedes for me at the right hand of the Father. This fills me with gratitude, knowing that my King is also my High Priest, always advocating for me and ensuring that I remain under His care.
- My Place in His Kingdom. Christ’s kingdom is personal as well as global. That is to say, His reign governs the entire world, but it also affects my daily life. I am called to live as a subject in His kingdom, submitting to His rule and spreading the message of His kingship. Because I am privileged to share in inviting others into the kingdom, my life, words, and actions should reflect the rule of Christ in me.
Prayer (Supplication):
Almighty and Everlasting King, Lord Jesus Christ, whose throne is exalted above the heavens and whose dominion extends to the ends of the earth, I come before You in humble submission. You are the rightful ruler of all nations, and to You every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that You are Lord. I lift my voice in prayer, asking that Your kingdom would come in fullness and that Your will would be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Grant, O King of kings, that Your gospel would go forth with power into every land. Cause the nations to hear of Your righteousness and bow before Your majesty. Let every false religion fall, every idol be cast down, and every proud heart be humbled before Your cross. Send forth laborers into Your harvest fields, and grant them strength, wisdom, and courage to proclaim Your truth in love. Break down barriers of unbelief, and open the hearts of men and women everywhere to receive the word of life.
Lord Jesus, as You reign over the nations, reign also in me. Subdue every rebellious thought, every selfish ambition, and every trace of pride. Let my heart be wholly Yours, governed by Your Spirit and shaped by Your Word. Teach me to serve You faithfully as a loyal subject of Your kingdom, using every gift and opportunity to advance Your cause and glorify Your name.
I pray for Your church across the earth, that she may stand united under Your banner. Strengthen her in truth, purify her by Your Spirit, and embolden her to shine as a light in a darkened world. May her witness be bold, her love sincere, and her doctrine pure, that through her testimony the nations may see Your glory.
Grant wisdom to rulers and leaders, that they may govern with justice and humility under Your sovereign authority. Turn their hearts as streams of water according to Your purpose. Let them be instruments of peace and order, restraining evil and promoting what is good. And if they resist Your will, O Lord, overrule their designs for the advancement of Your glory and the good of Your people.
Father, I pray also for the persecuted church—those suffering for Your name in distant lands. Uphold them with Your mighty hand, strengthen their faith, and remind them that their suffering is not forgotten before Your throne. Let their endurance testify to the unshakable power of Your kingdom, and through their witness, draw others to the truth of the gospel.
Lord, hasten the day when the kingdoms of this world shall become the kingdoms of our Lord and of His Christ and when the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea. Until that day, grant me grace to serve faithfully, to pray earnestly, and to hope steadfastly for the coming of Your glorious reign. I ask all this in Your holy name, O Christ, the King eternal, immortal, and invisible, who lives and reigns forever and ever. Amen.
