“Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you.”
(1 Peter 1:20)
Christ’s substitutionary death on the cross was not a plan God put in place in response to the Fall. Rather, before the world was ever formed, God purposed that Christ would be the Savior, Mediator, and Redeemer of His elect—a decision rooted in His infinite love and wisdom. And Christ was sent not only to provide salvation but to actually secure it for all who believe.[1] His coming into the world fulfilled the covenant made between the Father and the Son before time began, a covenant that would bring life and redemption to those who needed a Savior.
When we consider the depth of this eternal plan, we must remember that Christ’s purpose in His first coming was to restore sinners to a right relationship with God. He came to earth to open the door to the Father in heaven … and to bring us through it. Thus, the heart of the gospel is that Christ, the chosen One, was set apart by God before creation to purchase and redeem His people from sin.
As believers, this truth brings immense comfort because we know our salvation rests on the finished work of Christ who was foreordained to save us. It is by His priestly work that we are reconciled to God, as Hebrews 2:17 tells us, “Wherefore in all things it behooved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people.”
And in addition to His work as our High Priest, Christ is also our Prophet and King. As Prophet, He reveals the will of God to us, calling us to listen and obey (Deuteronomy 18:15). As King, He reigns over us, giving us the power to live as citizens of His kingdom, overcoming sin and death through His victory (Revelation 1:6).
Understanding this eternal design, and how it was executed through Christ, should lead us to a place of humility, gratitude, and trust. God’s plan was always for our good, and in Christ, we see the perfect fulfillment of that plan. And knowing Christ was chosen for this work long before the world began assures us that our salvation is secure, not because of anything we have done but because of God’s unchanging purpose.
So let us rest in the knowledge that Christ’s mission to save was always at the very heart of God’s eternal design. Every detail of Christ’s incarnation, life, death, and resurrection was woven into the fabric of divine intention long before Adam drew his first breath or sin entered the garden. As the beneficiaries of this divine plan, and because of Christ’s foreordained role, we can have full assurance that our salvation is secure in Him. Our salvation is as secure as God’s own faithfulness, as certain as His unchanging decree.
Therefore, let every believer take heart: your name was written in the Lamb’s book of life before the foundation of the world. Your redemption was purchased before you were born. Your sanctification was guaranteed before you took your first step. And your glorification is as certain as the throne of God.
Contemplations:
- Foreordained Love. 1 Peter 1:20 declares that Christ was foreordained as Savior before the world’s foundation. This humbles me deeply, knowing my salvation was a deliberate, loving choice of the Triune God long before I existed. When doubt or feelings of unworthiness rise, I cling to the truth that His steadfast love planned my rescue in eternity. I confess often trusting my feelings over His eternal purpose, but I will choose to rest in the security of His pre-creation love for me.
- Christ, My Prophet and Guide. Deuteronomy 18:15 points to Christ as the ultimate Prophet who reveals God’s will with perfect clarity and authority. In a world drowning in deception and confusion, His Word and Spirit guide me into truth, convicting, correcting, and directing my path. I must continually listen, obey, and submit to His voice above all others, for He alone speaks the words of eternal life.
- The Ultimate High Priest. Hebrews 2:17 portrays Christ as my merciful High Priest who, being fully human, understands my weaknesses and intercedes with compassion. Through His blood, He reconciles me to God, turning away wrath and granting peace. When I sin, I do not need to hide in shame but know that I can boldly approach His throne, confident in His atoning work and ongoing advocacy, trusting Christ’s priestly ministry to cleanse and restore me continually.
- Christ, My King. Revelation 1:6 proclaims Christ as King who makes us a kingdom of priests, ruling with sovereign power and grace. He not only saves but empowers me to live victoriously over sin, fear, and death. Under His reign, I find purpose, protection, and strength to walk in obedience and holiness.
Prayer (Thanksgiving)
Eternal God—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—I stand in awe and overflowing gratitude before the majesty of Your eternal counsel revealed in 1 Peter 1:20. Thank You that Christ was foreordained before the foundation of the world to be my Savior, not as a reaction to sin but as the centerpiece of Your glorious, unchanging plan of redemption.
Before the mountains were brought forth, before the seas were gathered, before a single star burned in the heavens, You purposed that the Lamb would be slain for me. What unspeakable love! What infinite wisdom! What sovereign grace! I praise You that my salvation was never in doubt, never contingent, never an afterthought—but sealed in the covenant of redemption before time began.
I thank You, Father, for choosing me in Christ even before creation, for setting Your affection upon me when I was yet unformed, for writing my name in the book of life with the ink of divine decree. I rejoice that Christ was manifest in these last times for me—not merely to offer salvation, but to secure it, to accomplish it, and to guarantee it by His perfect obedience and atoning blood. Thank You for the covenant between Father and Son, where Christ willingly took upon Himself the role of Surety, pledging to redeem a people who could never redeem themselves.
I lift my heart in praise for Christ my Prophet, as promised in Deuteronomy 18:15—the One who speaks Your very words, who unveils Your will with divine authority, and who guides me through the wilderness of this world with the lamp of His truth. Thank You for every time His Word has pierced my conscience, corrected my path, and led me beside still waters. Thank You for the Spirit who illuminates Scripture, making the voice of Christ clear amid the noise of falsehood.
I bless You for Christ my High Priest, as declared in Hebrews 2:17—the merciful and faithful One who was made like me in every way, tempted yet sinless, that He might succor me in my weakness. Thank You for His intercession that never ceases, for His blood that speaks better things than Abel’s, for His priesthood that is eternal, unchangeable, and sufficient. Thank You that because He lives, I have bold access to Your throne of grace.
I exalt You for Christ my King, as celebrated in Revelation 1:6, the victorious Lion of Judah who has made me a king and priest unto You. Thank You for conquering sin and death on my behalf, for ascending to Your right hand, for reigning until every enemy is made Your footstool. Thank You for the scepter of grace that rules my heart, for the power of Your resurrection that enables me to walk in newness of life.
O God, I thank You that every aspect of my salvation—from election to glorification—was planned, purchased, and promised before the ages began. Thank You that Christ’s foreordination means my faith is not fragile, my hope is not uncertain, and my future is not in jeopardy. Thank You for the security of knowing that what You purposed in eternity You perform in time, and what You perform in time You perfect in glory.
May my life be a continual sacrifice of praise, lived in humility, gratitude, and joyful submission to the Lamb who was slain from the foundation of the world. All glory, honor, and dominion be unto You, now and forever.
In the matchless name of Jesus Christ, my foreordained Redeemer, I pray. Amen.
