“Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied.”
(1 Peter 1:2)

In the first chapter of his first epistle Peter shares the incredible reality that the foundation of our salvation is rooted in God’s eternal wisdom and established before the world began. The Father, in His perfect sovereignty, not only determined that salvation would be made possible but also chose those who would come to know Him through His Son, Jesus Christ.

God the Father is the ultimate source and head of all things, especially in the work of redemption. He chose the Redeemer, appointed the way of salvation, and determined who would be redeemed … before He even created the first man. As Ephesians 1:3-4 explains, the Father “hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ: according as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world.” And His eternal plan includes every detail, from sending His Son to bear our sin to bringing us into fellowship with Him.

The fact that God the Father chose us means our relationship with Him is secure. Just as God appointed Christ to be our Redeemer and sustained Him throughout His earthly ministry, so too He will sustain us. Christ trusted the Father’s plan entirely, even to the point of death on the cross.[1] In the same way, we can trust that the Father will fulfill His promises to us and that He will not fail to bring about His purpose in our lives because His electing love does not depend on us; it is entirely a result of His grace and foreknowledge, as seen in our text.

This truth also means that we are part of something bigger than ourselves. The Father’s plan of redemption includes bringing us into His family and into fellowship with the Triune God. Jesus prayed in John 17:21, “That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us.” This is one of the most beautiful realities of our salvation—we are invited into the same relationship of love that the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit share.

Finally, this means we can be certain that the Father will never abandon us. Romans 8:32 assures us: “He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?”

God the Father is actively involved in every aspect of our salvation, from choosing us before creation to ensuring that we will one day dwell with Him in eternity. His love is steadfast, His plan is perfect, and His promises are sure.

The songs you sing are echoes of the anthem sung over you before creation. The prayers you pray are answers to the intercession Christ made for you before you breathed. The communion you share at the Lord’s table is a foretaste of the marriage supper already prepared for you in the Father’s house.

Every step of obedience is empowered by the sanctifying Spirit who was given to complete what election began. From first to last, salvation is of the Lord—the Father’s choice, the Son’s purchase, and the Spirit’s application.  So rest in the security of His electing love today, knowing that nothing can separate you from His care.

Contemplations:

  1. The Father’s Choosing. 1 Peter 1:2 declares I am elect according to the Father’s foreknowledge, not for any merit in me but purely by His grace. This humbles me profoundly and fills me with unshakable peace, knowing my salvation rests entirely on His sovereign, unchanging decision. No trial can undo what eternity secured. I confess doubting my place in His love during times of hardship, but I choose to now rest confidently in His pre-creation choice, trusting He will carry me to glory.
  2. The Security of His Love. Romans 8:32 proves that having given His Son, the Father will freely give all things which means my security is rooted in His costly sacrifice. When I need reassurance of His love, this verse comforts me with the strength of the Father’s commitment. His love is fierce, ultimately proven at Calvary. So I repent of measuring His love by circumstances and choose to cling to the cross as proof that nothing will ever separate me from the Father’s steadfast affection.
  3. Adopted into His Family. 1 John 3:1 reveals the lavish love that calls me a child of God; no longer an orphan or stranger but a beloved son with full privileges. The Creator is now my Father, treating me with tenderness, providing me with an inheritance, and disciplining me for my good. I embrace my adoption and choose to live empowered by grace to honor my Father in all things.
  4. Trusting in His Plan. John 17:21 invites me into the eternal oneness shared by the Father and the Son. Even in times of uncertainty, His plan prevails, guiding every step toward perfect unity with Him. I surrender to the Father’s perfect design, rejoicing that I am never alone but forever held in the communion of the Triune God.

Prayer (Thanksgiving)

O Father of eternal mercy and sovereign grace, I come before Your throne with a heart full of gratitude for the wonder of 1 Peter 1:2, elect according to Your foreknowledge, set apart by the Spirit, sprinkled with the blood of Jesus. Before the foundations of the world were laid, before a single star glittered in the heavens, You saw me, You chose me, and You loved me. What unfathomable kindness! What unsearchable wisdom! What unmerited favor! I was dead in trespasses, hostile in mind, unworthy in every way, yet You fixed Your heart upon me with delight. I praise You that my name was written in the Lamb’s book of life when as yet there was none of me to commend.

I thank You, Father, for Ephesians 1:3-4, and that You blessed me with every spiritual blessing in Christ, choosing me in Him before the foundation of the world. You did not wait to see what I would become but rather determined what I would be by uniting me to Your Son. Every gift of grace, every moment of sanctification, every promise of glory flows from that eternal choice. I rejoice that my salvation is not a divine afterthought but the outworking of Your perfect plan, conceived in love, executed in power, guaranteed by Your faithfulness.

I lift my voice in praise for Romans 8:32, in that He who did not spare His own Son but delivered Him up for me has promised that with Him He will freely give me all things. You gave the Best, the Beloved, the Only Begotten, that I might become Your adopted child. Because You gave Jesus, I lack no good thing. Because You gave Jesus, no accusation can stand. Because You gave Jesus, death has lost its sting, hell its victory, and fear its grip. Thank You for the unbreakable logic of Your love: if You gave the greater, You will surely give the lesser.

I bless You for 1 John 3:1, “behold what manner of love You have bestowed upon me, that I should be called a child of God!” I was an orphan wandering in a far country, but You ran to me, clothed me with Christ’s righteousness, placed Your ring on my finger, and welcomed me to Your table. The Creator of galaxies calls me “My son.” The Judge of all the earth declares me “Not guilty.” The Ancient of Days invites me to call Him “Abba, Father.” Thank You for adoption papers signed in blood, sealed by the Spirit, and filed in heaven’s courts forever.

I praise You for Christ’s prayer that I would be one with You as You are one with Him. Before He went to the cross, He prayed not for my success, my comfort, or my happiness, but for my inclusion in the sacred fellowship of the Trinity. Thank You that I am not merely saved from hell but brought into heaven’s blessings. Thank You that every prayer I pray is carried on the wings of the Son’s intercession. Thank You that the Spirit within me cries “Abba” with the same intimacy the Son has known from eternity.

Father, I thank You that election means security. No power can pluck me from Your hand. No failure can nullify Your choice. No season of darkness can undo Your light. You who began the good work will perform it until the day of Christ Jesus. You who chose me in eternity will present me faultless before Your throne with exceeding joy. Thank You for a love that cannot be earned, a grace that cannot be lost, and a calling that cannot be revoked.

I praise You that every circumstance—joy or sorrow, plenty or lack, health or pain—serves Your electing purpose. You weave all things together for my good because I am called according to Your purpose. Thank You for the trials that drive me to dependence, the victories that crown Your grace, the ordinary days that pulse with eternal significance. Thank You for the cross that proves Your love, the empty tomb that secures my hope, and the Spirit who seals me until the redemption of the purchased possession.

May my life be a continual note of thanksgiving, written in obedience, signed with worship, and sealed with love. All glory, honor, and praise be to You, the electing Father, the redeeming Son, and the sanctifying Spirit—one God, forever and ever.

In the name of Jesus Christ, my chosen Savior and eternal Brother, I pray. Amen.
