“Great is our Lord, and mighty in power; His understanding is infinite.” (Psa. 147:5).

Christians must adore Christ as a God of infinite power. “Thine is the power,” as the Lord’s Prayer states.

Thomas Ridgley said, “Dominion without power will not be sufficient to maintain its rights; therefore, since God is described as having the kingdom belonging to him, or being the governor among the nations, his attribute of power ought to be considered, by which he can, without the least difficulty, secure the welfare and happiness of his subjects, and bring to nought the designs of his enemies; or, as it is elegantly expressed, “look on every one that is proud and bring him low and tread down the wicked in their place,” “hide them in the dust together, and bind their faces in secret,” (Job 40:12-13).” Thomas Ridgley, The Works of Thomas Ridgley (Vol. 4).

In the Covenant of Nature, God revealed himself to man, as one God, Creator and Governor of all things, infinite in power, wisdom, nature, and substance. But in the Covenant of Grace, God revealed himself: one infinite God, and three persons distinguished, not only a Lord and Creator, but also a merciful Redeemer, not only in unity of essence, but also in Trinity of persons.

How is God’s almighty power made manifest in your personal life, or in your devotional life?

God is almighty, (Rev.1:18). This will evidently appear, in that if he is infinite in ail his other perfections, he must be so in power. In this way, if he is omniscient, he knows what is possible or expedient to be done; and, if he is an infinite sovereign, he wills whatever shall come to pass. Now, this knowledge would be insignificant, and his will inefficacious, if he were not infinite in power, or almighty. Again, this might be argued from his justice, either in regarding or punishing; for if he were not infinite in power, he could do neither of these things, at least so far as to render him the object of that desire, or fear, which is agreeable to the nature of these perfections. Neither could infinite faithfulness accomplish all the promises which he has made, so as to excise that trust and dependence, which is a part of religious worship. Nor could he say, without limitation, as he does, “I have spoken it, I will also bring it to pass; I have purposed it, I will also do it,” (Isaiah 46:11).

Contemplation:

There is nothing more natural for us, O Lord, than disobedience against You, and not to do as You have instructed us. Our wisdom is often directly opposition against You. We love the world, and the love of the world is enmity against You also; and we love our ease and our pleasures; and so we are always enemies to the cross of Christ. Lord, we have not as yet attained to get our spirits subdued to Christ’s commands. We often do not make your will our will. You are almighty, we are but vapors of smoke.

We often prescribe forms of Religion to ourselves, and on performing these, we promise peace to ourselves. Lord, this shows that we fail so often in ignorance and weakness, but that we should go against the light of our minds, and so wrong our consciences, this is a fearful, yes, and almost a desperate case.

O mighty God, while You calls on us, (for while You call it is not in vain,) while You light Your candle, sends out the good Shepherd to bring home the wandering sheep oh Your shoulders. do this for me for Jesus Christ’s sake; sweep the house, and find me, and gather me as one of Your treasures. where I am wandering on the mountains of sin, following the silliness of my heart, and exposing myself to be prey to Satan and all my enemies, Lord, take me on the shoulders of Your almighty mercy. Bring me into your sheepfold in safety.

Be my God, and establish me as your dear child. Help me to know Your loving-kindness towards me, so that such a love might knit my hear to Yours. Write Your law in my heart; incline my hearts to do Your will, and not to covetousness. Show me Your almighty power in mercy and in grace. Although I wander through this life in many oppositions and trials, through your power allow me the victory through Jesus Christ.
