“He shall cry unto me, Thou art my father, my God, and the rock of my salvation.” (Psa. 89:26).
If God is our Father, let this cause in us a child-like reverence, Mal. 1:6, “If I be a Father, where is my honor?”
Do you honor God as Father? Do you give God the due that He should have?
This is a part of the honor we give to God, when we reverence and adore him. If you have never always have a child-like confidence, yet you should always preserve in a child-like reverence. We are often ready to run into extremes and difficulties, either to become despondent or grow mischievous? Because God is a Father, do not think you may be secure and take liberty to sin; if you do, God may carry it so as if he were no Father; he may throw hell into your conscience.
Thomas Waston said, “When David presumed upon God’s paternal affection, and began to wax wanton under mercy, God made him pay dear for it, he withdrew the sense of his love; and though he had the heart of a Father, yet he had the look of an enemy. David prayed, “Cause me to hear the voice of joy.””
David lay several months in desertion, and it is thought he never would recover his full joy to the day of his death. Keep alive holy fear; with a child-like confidence, preserve an humble reverence and adore God in your quiet time with him, letting him know the fullness of your heart. The Lord is a Father, therefore love to serve him; he is the mighty God, therefore fear to offend him. Thomas Watson, A Body of Practical Divinity .
Contemplation:
Mighty God, I do not only love You, but certainly fear you. Though you are my Father, You are also my God. Gal. iv. 6, “Because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.” Yes, I cry to you are my dear Father, as you work in me as a believer, one who by the Spirit of adoption has been made a child of God. I have received the adoption of sons; and because I am a son or daughter, You send Your Spirit into my hearts. And this privilege of adoption we obtain by faith in Christ Jesus, John 1:12, “As many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name.”
You give me a special description of the Spirit as promised and given, he is the, “Spirit of the Son.” I have the Spirit of the Son in my heart. This not only excites me to cry to You, Abba Father, but instills in me the fear that is due you in reverence.
